August has gone by in a blur of mainly un-instaworthy DIY with some glorious sea swims thrown in for balance. It finally rained and it's SO GOOD to see clouds again! Let's hope my flower beds can rally now the drought is over and put on a better show for the end of the season. We also waved goodbye to our home for the last 1000 days 🚐 and are very glad and grateful to now have a solid roof over our heads 🏠

A few weeks ago Maeve stopped to buy flowers and eggs from our stand at the gate and we got chatting about her plans to start a sign-writing business. We had a very shonky, handmade sign down the lane and Maeve offered us an upgrade as part of her new venture - SilcrowSigns.

Maeve took so much time to understand what we liked and what mattered to us, what we grow and what our plans for the future of the field could be. It also turned out that I have much stronger opinions on fonts than I ever realised and with Maeve's knowledge and advice we chose a design that used the colour pallette of my favourite flowers and a clear, dyslexia-friendly, art deco style font that gave a nod to the local history as we are deep in Agatha Christie country down here.

Maeve has given us an heirloom-quality piece of art in the form of signage and we couldn't be happier with it and I'm now coming up with loads more plans for signs she could hand paint for us. They'd make really beautiful event or wedding signage if you're in the market for those but the possibilities really are endless. In a world awash with AI signage that all looks equally ugly, we are so proud to display our beautiful, human-made sign from SilcrowSigns. Thanks Maeve! 💐

July has felt about three months long
August, you have one job 🌧

Last week I had the huge privilege of providing funeral flowers for a family member of one of my oldest friends.

I'd never done any kind of formal arrangement before and I really wanted to do it justice and provide a fitting tribute to a much-loved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Initially the process was focussed on the logistics of making a casket spray that was fully biodegradable and that would survive storing and transporting in a heatwave. But once I'd sought the advice of Otok - Devon Florists and youtube and ordered the supplies I would need, my thoughts could turn to this woman I didn't know personally but whose favourite people are some of my favourite people and I concentrated on imagining what she would have liked to adorn her for her final family gathering.

She grew up in Belize and the family requested that her flowers reflect the Caribbean colours that she loved and I really tried to create a tropical feel to the Devon-grown flowers to combine the two places that were home to her.

Her name was Lily and just an hour before I was due to deliver the arrangements, this stunning, bright orange lily bloomed and was the perfect final touch.

I am so grateful to have had this experience and to have been given the opportunity to think about my connection to a stranger and the ways we can celebrate and remember a full life and an amazing legacy.

The gorgeous Dena from kindly agreed to stock my bouquets in her heavenly shop. Before I'd had time to get a pic of them all in their bucket, this lovely couple came and bought three bunches that Dena then worked her magic on and prettied up.

There are still two more bunches left if you're in Kingsbridge and fancy treating yourself, and I'll be dropping off more next Friday.

And yes you may notice a pattern emerging that I'm supplying to shops where I can immediately spend my earnings on delicious food or fabric or ceramics!

, just outside Totnes, have very kindly agreed to take a bucket of my bouquets to sell over the weekend alongside their fantastic produce, delicious coffees, home made lunches and exemplary cakes.

£10 a bunch, perfect timing for teacher gifts or just treat yourself to a cuppa with a view and some locally grown, pesticide free blooms.
