So, over the past two years we have been really focusing on open pollinating and seed saving our crops. Using only insects to do our work. 🐝

While most of the industry focus on selective breeding. Creating genetically linear crops that’ll grow the same plant with every seed (same height same size etc). Which can lead to loss of genetic diversity in our crops. - Loss of genetic diversity is a concern due to potential crop extinction through inbreeding depression. As well as lead to things like reduced potential response to environmental changes, which we all know there’s more of every year!

For an example - Remember how all carrots used to be purple? Well, white and yellow carrots were mutations of these. They were selectively bred by the Dutch by crossing the two, along with wild verities creating an orange carrot. Thus purple carrots became pretty much extinct until recent times!

By open pollinating we allowed nature to do the opposite; Creating genetically diverse crops that have a wide genetic profiles. So as well as the Japan giant red mustard we now have A range of leaf structures from wider more JGRM leaning to a thinner more PF leaning structure. Both taking on a beautiful range of variegation! As well as being larger than the purple frills.

The taste is less peppery than the purple frills, yet richer and slightly creamier than the Japanese giant red mustard. There’s a subtle floral taste and a back end of heat.

We initially planted our purple frills next to our Japanese giant red mustard two years ago. We allowed them to open pollinate. Later collecting the seed when ready. Last year we then sewed those seeds and again, left to open pollinate away not growing any other mustard types. And planted those seeds this year.

What has come this year is truly stunning! 🌱

As the rains slowly pass, the temperature slowly starts to drop as we head ever further into winter.
Things seem to slow down, even though the lack of daylight hours force more from us in the limited time we have.

…Time for another rotation. Now the chickens are in the main poly tunnel, working away. It’s time for Bo to be moved onto fresh pasture. We’re grateful for the lack of Wollowing he does or in a week we’d have another bog. Instead, he just grazes in the sun. Leaving in his wake fresh manure to slowly break down, fertilising the soil once more. No doubt, before the season is through, he’ll be moved onto another to help regenerate more soil on a different part of the farm, but for now, he’s happy in his new home

Made the flock a little outhouse with their old arc that they turned into a climbing frame, just incase the weather gets a bit too much for them over the next week 🌧

Peaches was in there as quick as you can say cuddles! Obviously! 🍑🐑

Broccoli absolutely lovely the weather 🥦

With winter starting to set in, the nights drawing closer and the morning air nipping at your lungs, we are busy preparing for the long winter ahead! 🥶

Most produce for over wintering has been put in the ground, covered the beds we won’t be using for the winter, moved the chickens into on of the poly tunnels so they can have at least artificial outside for the winter months, As well as w**d and fertilise the soil for me! 🐓

A few more tasks before we start to focus on 2023 summer months and dreaming of those long, warm, surf and music filled days! 🏄🏼‍♂️
