Omomo – 16 The Strand
Every time I’ve been here I’ve folded and gone for the fried chicken because it’s just so good. This time, however, I managed to try the army stew. It comes with hot dog, ham, noodles, eggs, veg and a few other bits. It’s brought out on a little gas hob and cooks on the table, which is quite an experience. It’s like Korean BBQ but the soup version.
I think you have to order it as part of a two-person meal because of this, but realistically you could eat a whole one yourself if you’re hungry enough. It’s only £25 as well, so pretty good value.

Nando’s – Meteor Centre, Derby
Whole chicken with pickled veg and slaw came in at about £25-ish. Nando’s in 2026 is still a decent option as far as chains go. I want to berate it, but it is actually tasty, and if you just get a full chicken it’s £17, which isn’t ridiculous money. Loads of sauce options too — I personally recommend the garlic one.

Salt & Pepper Squid – Lucky House, Duffield Road
I get seafood cravings sometimes, and salt & pepper squid from a Chinese usually sorts that out. This was my first time trying this place. Walked in, realised I’d forgotten cash — but they take card.
Squid was average, to be honest. Just fried frozen squid with those weird crispy bits underneath. Ate it all, but probably wouldn’t go back specifically for this.

Arepita – Derby Market Hall
Went for the fish arepa with the plantain fritter, as recommended. Yucca fries and a lemon tea drink included for £12.
You don’t get loads, but it is quite filling and something genuinely different for Derby. The fish was a bit salty, but I liked it. I’d probably go pork or chicken next time though.

Best Pizza & Kebab – 4 Macklin Street
After 15+ hours of travelling and going straight to work, I ordered from here mainly because of the BOGOF offer they were running on Uber. £13.78 delivered for two chicken shish kebabs.
For the price, you can’t complain. It was mostly naan bread though — would’ve appreciated a bit more salad, although that’s probably not what their usual customer is after.
6/10 — did the job.

Doner Cob – 3 Chefs, Nottingham Road
Naughty, but for £4 you get loads of meat, salad and sauce. It’s embarrassing to rate something this pathetic, but here we are. If you’re craving it, it won’t disappoint and it’s very good value.

Jar’maican Soup – 15 Whiston St, Derby DE23 8GL
I’ve walked past this place a few times, but because of the location it’s easy to forget it’s there. You can choose small, medium or large at £5, £7 and £9.
They had pea soup and chicken soup in stock so I tried both. There’s one small dine-in table where I had them. It’s more like a curry than a typical soup — proper homemade stuff and very tasty.
A really nice, healthy option in Derby. I hope he stays open.

The Modern – 84 Wiltshire Road, Chaddesden
I had the Singapore Modern special, small salt and chilli chips with curry sauce, and a large chicken and noodle soup — £25.64.
The Singapore dish was the standout: plenty of spice and flavour, with good meat content. Chips were standard, and the noodle soup was okay — I’ve had better elsewhere.
Because of that Singapore dish, it edges slightly above average for me.

Lamb Quzi – Ran Shawarma
Large lamb quzi for £13. Comes with rice, salad and soup. You can choose white rice or yellow veg rice — I went with yellow.
Pretty good overall. Bit of gristle on the lamb, but that’s to be expected with a whole piece. Meat was nice and soft. Their whole chicken is so good I’d probably just get that again next time, but this was solid.

Mezzo – Unit 19, Victoria Way, Derby DE24 8AN
I had the halloumi with boiled veg and coleslaw. It’s not particularly cheap and I wouldn’t say the quality is amazing, but they do honest, homely food well.
There’s such little competition in Derby for takeaway that isn’t fried or drowned in oil that this place seems to clean up that “healthy takeaway” gap. They do make it taste good.

Afghan Darbar Restaurant – 217–219 Normanton Road, Derby
Used to be called The Kebab House for years, now under new ownership. We had the whole chicken with salad and sauce deal (£11.99) and a mixed grill (£16.99).
The chicken is really special — they spatchcock it in a way I’ve not really seen done exactly like this before. The mixed grill was okay but the lamb was a bit chewy; the chicken is by far the best option out of the two.
They’ve got loads of options, including a full lamb for £275. Still very highly rated and the interior is lovely.
