Jim Yates Shires, Home of The Cowerslane Shire Horse Stud. Thanks for reading, sorry it was so long !!

The Cowerslane Shire Horse Stud is one of the oldest continuous Shire Horse Studs in the world, and has been breeding and showing horses for the last three generations of the Yates Family. Before that of course, the shire horse was an integral part of every working farm in The United Kingdom. My family has worked the shires on the land and the streets of Derbyshire, as well as competing at ploughi

ng matchs in my younger years. My father Tom Yates walked the studs own stallion around the farms of Derbyshire, and we have always had at least one stallion at stud, currently Cowerslane Imperial, a Dark Brown 4 Year Old Stallion, who is producing some lovely foals . We have bred many champion shires, proven stock getters, and working horses that have done everything from extracting logs out of a forest, to pulling the Lord Mayors Coach in London. Showing has always been my passion, and we have enjoyed great success in the show ring, winning numerous Shire Horse Society National Championships, and County Shows. The highlight though has been our success at The Horse of The Year Show, competing at the very first competion in 1974, winning it 3 times with home bred shires, reserve champion with a gelding, and numerous other placings. We will be competing this year with Sheepwash Derbyshire Eventide who has qualified three years in a row now. When I have not got my hands covered in wood flour, I have been a serving Shire Horse Society Council Member for over 40 years, as well as serving on numerous other sub committees. I am also the chairman of The Midland Shire Foal Society, and am actively involved in numerous other shire and agricultural activities. Occasionally we offer some of our horses for sale to a good home, and we have exported many horses across the world, be it for showing working or playing. Alrewas Show today, judge Jack Kitching had 25 horses before him. We won two firsts, and Cowerslane Evie’s Delight continues her fantastic summer taking Reserve Supreme Champion.

Ashby show today, 18 horses came forward under judge Nigel Blakey,
Cowerslane Lady Jackie won supreme champion shire, before going on to win Supreme Champion Heavy Horse.
Well supported by our award winning yearling filly , Cowerslane Evie’s Delight, who continued her fantastic season winning the yearling class.

Derbyshire County Show today, and we chose to show our youngsters. Cowerslane Evie’s Delight continues her fantastic summer, winning the yearling class. She then went further winning Junior Champion, Best Derbyshire Bred Horse, and Reserve Supreme Champion.

This beautiful black 4 year old mare, with her black c**t foal at foot, is available for new home. She is also tested in foal for next year.

Staffordshire County Show today, where Cowerslane Lady Jackie did us proud, taking The Supreme Champion Shire.
She was ably supported by her new best friend, Cowerslane Evie’s Delight who won the largest class of the day, the yearlings.

Nottinghamshire County Show today, with a strong show of award winning shires forward for judge Elspeth Ross.
We were delighted to take Junior Champion, and Reserve Champion Shire with our yearling filly, Cowerslane Evie’s Delight.

Cowerslane Marlee was born last night, a lovely black filly foal.

Last weekend we exhibited two young home bred fillies at The National Shire Show.

Cowerslane Evie’s Delight & Cowerslane Emerald.

Very proud of these fillies, and they certainly attracted many admirers.

Standing third and fifth in their respective classes.

Looking forward to a strong summer.
