The Sticky Beak Blog Restaurant reviews, news and foodie events from around Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire

I am a local Derbyshire bird, who along with her family and friends likes to spread her wings and get her beak sticky sampling food, wine and beer in local restaurants and venues. Hopefully having good times and discovering hidden treasures in our glorious neighbourhood along the way. I'm not particularly snobby about fancy food or surroundings; I just like a place to be clean, friendly, have atmosphere and be able to do a decent job of cooking the food that is their trade.

What does a food blogger do on a night off? 🤔

Go out for dinner, of course! 😂 at Rokaa in Ripley.

A genuine night off tonight — no invite, no review, no notebook and absolutely no work. We just fancied going back to one of the venues we already recommend and enjoying dinner like normal people for once! 😜

And it was as good as ever 😋 Fresh bread, dips, salad, grilled meats, chicken and rice — exactly the sort of feast we fancied.

Of course, apparently taking photos of our food is now so deeply ingrained that even on a night off the camera still comes out! 📸😂

No review incoming… we really did just go for dinner! ❤️

Invited: A first taste of the brand-new food offering at Candlemaker in Ripley! 👀🍴

Candlemaker has only recently opened its doors as a café, bar and w**e spot, and tonight we popped along during the soft launch of its new food offering.

And what a spread! 😍 We tucked into dishes including 10-hour Basque Short Rib, Duck Breast with Savoury Cherry Compote, Pan-Crisped Pork Belly, Patatas Bravas and Padrón Peppers.

There’s a cracking choice of w**es too, with plenty available by the glass, alongside cocktails and spritzes — naturally, we felt obliged to investigate! 🍷🍹😂

A lovely evening discovering what this new addition to Ripley has to offer. Keep your eyes peeled for the full Sticky Beak review, coming soon 👀

We received our food and drinks complimentary. We were not paid to visit and the venue has no editorial control over our content.

SUNDAY LUNCH AT THE BEAR INN, ALDERWASLEY 🐻

You lovely lot recommended it, so we piled Mummy Bird into the jalopy and headed along the winding country lanes to one of Derbyshire’s most historic inns.

What followed was a seriously generous Sunday roast: beautifully cooked meats, enormous roasties, caramelised root vegetables and quite possibly one of the best cauliflower cheeses we’ve tasted in the ’Shire! 😋

The Grade II-listed Bear is packed with old-world charm, from its log burners and wooden beams to all those wonderfully wonky floors and walls. It’s also great to see this much-loved venue finding its feet again.

Hot Wings happily awarded 🔥

Invited: A little taste of Pemberley in the heart of Derbyshire 📚🍰

The Pride & Prejudice Afternoon Tea is still being served at The Cavendish Hotel in Baslow, so we thought it was the perfect time to revisit our experience.

From superb sandwiches, garden quiche and one of the finest sausage rolls His Nibs has encountered, to delicate cakes, homemade scones and carefully selected loose-leaf teas, this was afternoon tea with a distinctly Regency flourish.

Add the beautiful Garden Room, views across the Chatsworth Estate and warm, polished service, and it was an experience worthy of Mr Darcy himself.

Please indulge me. This post isn’t food or drink related; instead, it praises some unsung heroes… The 1st Tupton Scout Group.

After we’re all reminiscing about what a marvellous time we had over the weekend at Chatsworth Country Fair, these lads and lasses are quietly going around the site today doing a HAND litter pick to ensure that Chatsworth’s grounds are spick-and-span for future visitors.

Cracking job, you’re all a-ma-zing!! “Not all heroes wear capes, some wear neckerchiefs and Woggles” 😊.

Invited | Sunday lunch at The Cricketts Inn, Acresford 😍

We’ve gone for the Steak & Ale Pie, Roast Gammon and Roast Leg of Lamb, all £18 — and just look at those portions! 👀

Alongside come dishes for the table to share, including roasted root vegetables, cauliflower cheese and buttered greens, plus plenty of extra gravy.

Generous portions, loads of flavour and not a scrap left behind! 😋

Anyone else been to The Cricketts Inn for Sunday lunch?

Invited: Could this be the best steak we’ve ever eaten? 🥩

We returned to the 2 AA-Rosette awarded Dovecote Restaurant at Morley Hayes for its monthly Steak Night—and its magnificent 16oz Dexter Fillet absolutely blew us away!

From Miso-glazed Mackerel and Chicken and Duck Liver Parfait to superb triple-cooked chips, a sumptuous Spinach, Leek and Cheese Gratin and two spectacular desserts, this was a meal that delivered from beginning to end.

Add polished service and a setting that makes you feel special from the moment you arrive, and it’s easy to see why The Dovecote consistently retains those two AA Rosettes.

Would you share the steak—or insist on having it all to yourself? 😋

Food, falcons, flying hooves and dancing diggers — what a day we had at Chatsworth Country Fair! 🐎🦅🚜

From Mark Aisthorpe wielding a hacksaw in the Chefs on Stage tent and the thrills of the Mounted Games, to the Parachute Display Team dropping into the Grand Ring and a falcon hurtling past at 87mph, there was never a dull moment.

We also found fabulous food, traditional fairground fun, country pursuits, vintage cars and, inevitably, a little shopping! We took loads of photos, so here’s a proper look at our day. 📸

The Fair continues tomorrow, Sunday 6 September — read our full review here:

There’s so much more to Chatsworth Country Fair than the action in the Grand Ring! 👀

We’ve been having a proper wander around the showground, and there’s something going on in just about every direction.

Traditional dry-stone walling and hedge laying, country crafts, rural policing, military displays, ferrets (complete with rosettes! 🏵️), some rather smart country clothing and plenty more besides.

Then it was back to the Grand Ring in time for the fabulous Vintage Car Parade — and what a setting for those beauties with Chatsworth House behind them. 🚗

You could easily spend the whole day here and still not see everything!
