Bit of a mystery malt theme this week. We are in London this week so I thought I'd join the Scotch Malt Whisky Society so we could visit their Whisky Rooms on Greville Street. £100 got me that membership and a mystery bottle which turned out to be a sherried Mannochmore 16 year old. Its a fantastic bottle! I love the packaging as well, made joining the society feel very special.

My disappointment with the Master of Malt Mystery bottle prompted me to open my Thompson Bros Mystery Bottle. Boy am I glad I did! A beautiful 11yr old Glen Scotia Ruby Port. 48.5%. Thompson Bros never let us down do they!

I havent had too many disappointments in whisky but this was definitely one of them. I paid £65 for a Mystery bottle from Masters of Malt and got a Hibiki Harmony. The bottle is fine but at 43% and one that I've already had before it felt a bit of a let down. I was hoping for something I hadn't encountered before, something unusual perhaps and I got this.

Of course , that's the game I suppose but I'll not be getting another Mystery Malt from Master of Malt. Anyone else had similar experiences?

On Friday 11th September, Darley Abbey Wines are welcoming Paul Main, one of Scotland's best-known whisky communicators, for a tasting celebrating the whiskies of Hunter Laing and Ardnahoe Distillery.

Hunter Laing has long been one of Scotland's leading independent bottlers and now owns Ardnahoe, Islay's newest distillery. It's a rare opportunity to explore both their acclaimed Old Malt Cask range and the exciting new Ardnahoe releases in one evening.

We did this last night and Sweden’s High Coast Hav beat India’s Amrut Fusion in the final

If the upcoming was based on Whisky not football teams from each country, who takes the cake?

We had a great time at The World Cup of whisky which was a night full of surprises and great, unusual whiskies.

There was an early shock when Mexico’s Abasalo edged out USA’s heavyweight New Riff Bottled in Bond Bourbon. Sweden’s High Coast Hav, easily dispensed with South Africa’s Three Ships 12 year old. In a tough, closely fought encounter India’s Amrut Fusion saw off New Zealand’s Thomson’s Full Noise Manuka Smoke.

In the final play off, Abasolo finished third but with only a couple of votes in it Sweden’s High Coast Hav came out as winners making India’s Amrut Fusion runners up.

I think it was safe to say that at the beginning of the night, no-one saw that coming.

Well done High Coast!
