I have a compost bin!
It's such a tiny step, but after 2 years of not utilising composting, it feels amazing to have this set up and the first load of kitchen waste happily rotting away. I have a love/hate relationship with composting, but I've recognised that if I'm going to be successful in itn I need to adopt a few disciplines that really help:

- I need a big bowl on the kitchen side to gather my scraps. I'm not going to be going out after every meal, so somewhere to store the day's waste really helps. Something I can easily put in the dishwasher too and doesn't require fancy bags or a large amount of space. I literally use a spare mixing bowl.

- The compost bin needs to be sufficient. There's no use having it the size of a golf ball and having to work the produce every few weeks. I need something that I can dump heaps of food waste into and leave until a soil turn over.

- It needs to be near my house! Sure, the amble through the garden in the peak of summer is kinda lovely, but in the middle of winter when it's cold and raining the last thing you want to do is be outdoors wrestling the compost bin lid off. I have it close by and easily accessible, which means it's visible, but I get it done.

Looking ahead to a glorious batch of homemade soil in the years to come!

She looks a little formidable, but our Sussex hen is the sweetest girl - always the first to take in chicks and mother them (and unfortunately always the first to go broody too!).
Our girls have been loving the sun recently - lots of extra grapes and frozen veggies have made it out into their run to keep them hydrated and cool. Hope you're all enjoying the weather!

We're so late to planting season but we've strapped on our wellies and have started the arduous task of sorting out the gardens ready for this year's harvests. Last Autumn we bought hundreds of flower bulbs to plant but a newborn baby, a broken ankle and a car crash meant we were out of action and they were left dormant. We're taking a risk though and we''re going to hide these in the soil and see what they become - perhaps they'll bloom next year and fill the garden with colour? Or perhaps they'll mulch down into beautiful compost and nourish the plants already there? Either way, nothing goes to waste here and we're happy with that. What have you sown this year?

We've spent our day sorting out the gardens and cutting the last of the flowers before winter fully sets in. We'll be planting tonnes of bulbs for cutting ready for spring and we can't wait to see the wave of colour that's going to come up!
These dahlias have been our favourites this year and we'll definitely be saving this tuber for next summer. What a beauty!

We're knee deep in harvesting season here preparing for the winter months and the following sowing season next year. Blueberries, peas, potatoes, cauliflower, lettuce, sweet peas, dahlias and strawberries have all been collected this year and their seeds stored away for later. Feeling one step closer to running a sustainable small holding!

We've been sweetpea harvesting!

One of our goals is to be self sufficient as a family and that means harvesting seeds and preparing them for future sowing! Flowers, fruits and vegetables are all part of the plan and we're looking forward to seeing these little sweetpea seeds bloom next year!

Sweetpea seedlings on sale next spring!

We have another team member!
William was born on Thursday 9th September and we can't wait to see him join in with the Quail Garden like his brother and sisters! He's too little now, but soon he'll be cuddling chickens like the rest of them!
