30th July. The polytunnel in full production. Tomatoes ripening early thanks to the heatwaves, aubergines swelling, peppers appearing, basil planted out under tomatoes, melons (a first after several attempts) and shallots and the first onions drying out.

28th July. Diggin' my potatoes! Not a great crop this year due to lack of lovely rain but effective irrigation has helped. Maris Bard, Cheyenne & Charlotte. Next job after a day or so drying to harden skins: bagging up for storage and planting out leeks.

23rd July. Green manure sown a few weeks ago coming through after some sparse rain and irrigation. Equal areas of alfalfa/lucerne, crimson clover & Phacelia sown ( great source of nectar & pollen for bees as well as bringing up soil nutrients from deeper down and fixing nitrogen) but clover hasn't done well & fat hen and mallow have smothered around half the area. Handweeding and resowing needed unfortunately...

J picking morello cherries under the netting. Doesn't look pretty & it's a pain to put on the netting but the blackbirds...

J picking morello cherries under the netting. Doesn't look pretty & it's a pain to put on the netting but the blackbirds did a good job of clearing all the smaller/less productive trees so we netted the three best trees & left the rest to the birds. A few kilos of these sour cherries will be enough for a couple of tarts & a few pots of jam.
Despite the heatwave and lack of rain, these trees somehow manage to find water in the soil with their questing root tips. None of the trees in the orchard have been irrigated this year.

Once again reverting to a pickaxe and mattock to excavate planting holes for the squash transplants...

Working a sort of Continental Day during the heatwave-up at 6-ish to walk dog & irrigate crops (using nifty new Sumisoaker). Indoors for most off the day if it's over 30 degrees then back out from 5/6pm for more watering and any physical tasks til it gets dark around 9.30/10pm. Polytunnel tomatoes, peppers and aubs doing well but need watering twice a day as do courgettes, cucumbers and squash. Potatoes doing better since using the Sumisoaker hose but smaller yield than usual, likewise peas, broad beans, carrots and salad leaves. On the up side tomatoes have ripened early and we have picked enough peas for ourselves...

Poppies doing well next to the peas & beans. Will wait until they've finished flowering before clearing & covering.
