🐔 Is Red Mite Affecting Your Chickens? 🐔

The the warmer weather arriving here’s what to look out for ..

Red mites are one of the most common pests affecting poultry, especially during the warmer months. These tiny parasites feed on your chickens at night and can cause:

❌ Stress and discomfort
❌ Feather loss
❌ Reduced egg production
❌ Pale combs and anaemia
❌ Poor overall health

Regular coop cleaning and early treatment are key to keeping your flock healthy and happy.

We’ve got a range of red mite treatments, powders, sprays and coop hygiene products available to help protect your birds and tackle infestations before they become a bigger problem.

☀️ Our hens have certainly been making the most of the sunshine this week! 🐔

If you look closely, you’ll spot some of them enjoying a good dust bath. While it might look like they’re getting dirty, dust bathing is actually an important part of keeping chickens healthy and happy.

Dust baths help hens:
✨ Remove excess oil from their feathers
✨ Deter parasites such as mites and lice
✨ Keep their feathers in top condition
✨ Relax and display natural behaviours

A clean, dry area with plenty of loose bedding or soil gives chickens the perfect spot to enjoy this essential part of their daily routine.

Don’t they look content soaking up the sun? 🌞

✨ Hen of the Week ✨
Silver Spangled Appenzeller 🤍🖤

These striking birds are medium-sized hens that mix wonderfully with other breeds, making them a lovely addition to mixed flocks 🐔✨

Known for their distinctive forward-pointing crest and slender build, Appenzellers are brilliant foragers and love exploring. They’re wonderfully independent birds and often look after themselves while still laying well on very little food 🌿

🥚 Egg facts:
• Approx. 220 cream-white eggs per year
• Reliable layers with elegant white eggs 🤍

Beautiful, active, and full of personality — the Silver Spangled Appenzeller certainly knows how to stand out ✨

Meet Devon Sage 💚🐔

These sweet girls are very similar to the Devon Blue, but with beautiful blue feathers and a small fluffy tuft on top of their heads 🤍

They’re the perfect “in-between” size — larger than bantams but smaller than large fowl, making them ideal for many backyard flocks.

🥚 Egg facts:
• Approx. 260 medium green eggs in their first laying year
• Their eggs are a lighter green shade than the Devon Olive eggs

Gentle, pretty, and productive… what’s not to love about Devon Sage? ✨
