Gwenyn Gruffydd was founded in 2010 when Gruffydd decided to follow his dream of keeping bees. Gruffydd was kindly given a hive of bees by a friend farming locally and it is from there the dream developed into a reality. Gruffydd enrolled onto a beekeeping course in Carmarthenshire that year and the 1 hive in the back of his mum and dad's garden quickly multiplied into around 100 hives, dotted aro

und several locations in Carmarthenshire 10 years on. Amdanom ni

Cafodd 'Gwenyn Gruffydd' ei sefydlu yn 2010 pan benderfynodd Gruffydd Rees ddilyn ei freuddwyd o gadw gwenyn. Derbyniodd Gruffydd gwch gwenyn gan ffrind oedd yn ffermio'n lleol ac aeth ati i ddysgu sut i gadw gwenyn a mynychodd gwrs cadw gwenyn yn Sir Gâr. Ers dechrau gydag un cwch yng ngardd ei fam a'i dad cynyddodd nifer ei gychod gwenyn yn gyflym. Heddiw, sef 10 blynedd yn ddiweddarach, mae gennym tua 100 o gychod gwenyn mewn amryw leoliadau ar draws Sir Gâr.

Prif nod Gwenyn Gruffydd yw i werthu mêl pur o'r safon uchaf sydd ar y farchnad.

It’s almost that time of year when we stop selling nucs for the year! It’s one of my favourite jobs in Beekeeing! But after doing it every week since April I can do with a rest and change of routine! 😅

Bee smokers can be a fire risk in the summer when the ground is super dry….not normally a problem for Wales! (Rain is forecast for today!)
Keeping a fire extinguisher in the truck is good practice. It can save the boot of your car just in case your smoker tips or you can use it to put a fire out on the ground. Both is a genuine fire risk.

The last thing you want is to set fire to a wheat or hay field!

I picked this up in the middle isle in Lidl yesterday. (Yes i do end up buying the most random things from there! 😅. But I thought this was a bargain and good for beekeepers to know.

We REALLY REALLY need warm weather pretty soon. There was a decent nectar flow last couple of days but rest of the week looks very miserable 😞 The bramble all around the farm is in flower. How’s it looking in your part of the country? 🌥️ 🐝

June gap. Queen off the lay. Brood nest contracted.

Perfect conditions for a varroa check so we ran one.

Clean alcohol wash. No visible DWV. Colony looking strong.

We were shocked.

Because the wash doesn’t lie.

With less brood to hide in, the mites had nowhere to go. Normally at this time of year they’re buried under capped wax feeding on larvae, invisible. Reduced brood nest forced them out onto the bees and straight into the wash.

Same test on a different colony here last week: zero. This one told a different story.

Don’t let anyone tell you their bees don’t have mites. Every colony has them. The question is whether your test is catching them. Or are you looking for them.

Last winter the UK recorded its worst ever honey bee losses in recent years. Varroa was the reason.

Treat in autumn. Treat again in winter. No exceptions. The mites are in your hive now! I guarantee it!
