A Job opportunity at Exmoor Fisheries, Brompton Regis, Dulverton, West Somerset, TA22 9NS. Due to internal promotion, we will be looking for somebody to work at Exmoor Fisheries, joining our team of 6 full and part time people.
We have been here for 40 years and supply high quality Trout for fishing lakes and reservoirs around the South West, breeding them from eggs until they are the right size and then delivering them to our customers. We are based just outside of Brompton Regis in a hidden valley at the end of a no through road.
The job doesn’t need a Trout expert, we can teach you that bit, its varied and wide ranging, you won’t get bored and no two days are the same. Everybody who has joined over the years came from other industries or general farming/game keeping.
You need to be practical, have common sense and ideally have a good range of general handy-person skills. We have the experts who can teach you the specifics of Trout, which is 50% of the job, the other 50% is general maintenance, repairs and even some gardening in the summer on our 7-acre site, so you must be prepared to turn your hand to most things.
It needs a can-do, common sense and caring approach, we want a team member who doesn’t just turn up for work and do as they are told, we want a person who if they spot a problem will either sort it out proactively or come and tell the rest of the team, someone who can work on their own initiative when needed and ensure our Trout are well cared for.
We think it’s a great place to work, if you enjoy the outside life it’s as good as it gets, we are in a National Park where people normally pay to have a holiday in this type of environment, we have wildlife everywhere, clean air, great views and no background noise, just lots and lots of water and trees.
However, sometimes it rains and sometimes it’s cold, whilst some of the work is indoors in our Hatchery a lot of the work is outdoors in all weathers, great when it’s a nice day, not so great when it’s cold and raining. The clothing allowance provided allows you to buy the right kit.
The basics:
• It’s 5 days a week, 8-5pm with an hour for lunch and the usual tea breaks. Weekend working is involved on every third weekend when you will get 2 days off during the week to compensate.
• You need to be reasonably fit and healthy, at the end of the day the job requires a level of general fitness and lifting, we mechanically handle the heavy stuff as much as we can but some things will always require a level of fitness to complete.
• You must live in a reasonable commuting distance to us at TA22 9NS.
• You must have a clean-ish driving licence and be able to drive both our 3.5ton LCV (car licence) and ideally a 7.5ton truck. The job entails occasional deliveries to customers to cover for the regular driver when he is away. If you passed your car driving test pre-1997 you will have the category C1 on your licence which will cover this, if not then we can put you through the driving test needed. We will also teach you how to deliver Trout, it’s not complicated once you get the hang of it.
