We are looking for your old tables/chairs and benches!
As many of you know we're always on the hunt when it comes to reusing instead of buying new and right now we're looking for some furniture to be used in our cafe space. We're always up for a bit of re-vamping so it doesn't matter about the condition 🎨 we just want to reuse and relove the things that have been sat, unused, in your garages/lofts ect..
We hope to be back with you as soon as possible and we'd just like to say thank you for your continued support throughout these crazy times.
This is a brilliant recycling scheme happening not too far away. If you find that you are inundated with crisp packets, especially while having your kids at home all the time, then collect them up and send them off to a good cause! Crisp Packet Project

In this post, we're looking at loose fill packaging chips made from 100% potato starch. Have you been receiving a lot more home deliveries and generally purchasing more online since the pandemic started? We have. Of course it's best to buy locally when and where you can, but lockdown has greatly restricted us from doing so. It's great to see that eco-conscious companies are now finding innovative ways to cut down on the single-use plastic waste involved in parcel deliveries. This makes it possible to purchase responsably even during a pandemic! Thank you to companies like Live Well for using a 100% compostable potato starch alternative to polystyrene. The video shows how the chips biodegrade in water in seconds - weirdly satifying to feel and watch! The residue went in the compost bin ☺️
Oooo 👀 look at these lovely new (to us) reclaimed fabrics we have in!
More makeup wipes hot off the press!
On our adventure yesterday we were shocked to find so much rubbish across the rocks at Balcary cliffs (Auchencairn) .. Please, if you are out enjoying the sunshine, take your litter home! Or at leased put it in the bin in the car park.. luckily we managed to clear it all before the tide came in and it was washed into the sea, where it would be added to the glut of plastic already poisoning our oceans.
♻️The start of our new stock! ♻️
Using 100% recycled and natural materials, these reusable makeup wipes are a great alternative to disposable ones!
All handmade on the Galloway coast too, so you can't get much more local than that! 🐓
Okay! So it's been a while since we closed our doors and this is what we've been up to...
We had a pile of pallets in our garden so with a bit of elbow grease we transformed them into a couple of raised beds, to start growing our own food, completely plastic free! ** We even re-used the nails 🔨 **
So what has this lockdown given you? Have you found yourself reusing and recycling to get your garden off the ground? Send us some photos of your gardening achievements!
It's with a heavy heart that we write this post, but given the recent developments with Covid-19, we have decided to close Zero Waste Space for the forseeable future.
All our events have been postponed for a time when it is safe for people to gather in public spaces again and our cafe and shop will also shut for this period. This is in regards to personal health issues and the safety of others.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your continued support over the last few months and hope to be opening our door again soon.
If at any point our space can be used to help the community we will do what we can. So keep us in mind when it comes to support for the old and vulnerable in D&G.

🌸!BRAS!🌸
We are now a collection point for your old bras! May they be ill fitting or just a bit worn out, we'll take them!
All donations will be sent to Support The Fight Against Breast Cancer where every tonne of donated bras raises £700 for vital research. The donated bras also help to support small businesses in Africa. Together with Against Breast Cancer's recycling partners, their textile recovery project prevents the bras going into landfill by giving them a new lease of life in developing countries such as Togo, Ghana and Kenya, where bras remain too expensive to produce locally.
So drop them in if you're passing and when we have enough we'll send them on!
Zero Waste Space will be CLOSED today due to snow and slippy roads. Hope to be back tomorrow ❄

A member of the Zero Waste Space team went to another session at 1st Morton Brownies at Thornhill Community Centre this evening. Katie talked to the girls (and one boy!) about the Eco Deco plant in Dumfries and how, although recycling is more difficult in Dumfries & Galloway than in most regions of the UK, it really is better for the environment to go the extra literal mile to your local recycling centre (e.g. Lincluden) with your recyclable waste or alternatively to collect items to send to companies like Terracycle. Kirsty, who co-runs 1st Morton Brownies, put a "round robin" to the group 3 days before a session to ask them to bring in their plastic waste. The plastic bags in the foreground demonstrate the plastic waste the group accumulated after only 3 days and I'm sure there was far more that wasn't included! Here the group are shouting "Plastic is horrible!" but really they should have shouted "Plastic is rubbish!", of course!
