Aitken Wines

Aitken Wines Serving the best for over 150 years Aitken Wines, one of Scotland's oldest independent wine merchants, since 1874.

In 1874 when James Aitken became a wine merchant in Dundee, he could not have imagined how the world of wine would change or that nearly 140 years later his family would still be providing customers with the same knowledgeable and dependable Aitken Wines service. As with winemaking itself, it's all about balance; and in providing you with the best wines we find, at the best prices, and with the right advice, we hope to have the balance about right.

Continuing our week with Pamela from Lobban Wines it was fascinating to learn she was originally from Bridge of Allan, and started working in Whisky ๐Ÿฅƒ

She then moved into wine making in Australia with Penfolds, the rather famous wine producers. Before coming back to Barcelona and setting up her own enterprise.

Fast forward to this summer series, and Pamela will soon be retiring from wine making. These wines are precious and soon there won't be anymore...

We love how she involved the whole family in the naming of her wines too. Although we learn in the video her brother didn't get the best translation treatment - watch to see what we mean! ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Pop in and see what stock we have of Pamela's expert range. The sparkling pink featured on this reel is a fabulous wine! ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ”— in bio for buying online. We are keeping summer alive with this gorgeous sparkling numbers!

Babito Brut
Made from Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada, the classic Cava blend, Babito Brut is a traditional method sparkling white with a pale golden colour. On the nose there's crisp green apple and zesty lemon, layered with nuttiness, brioche and pastry notes. The palate brings baked apple, lemon curd and a hint of pear, all wrapped in a creamy, well balanced texture. It's recently disgorged for freshness after spending an extended period on fine lees, which builds that signature creaminess. Dry, medium bodied and easy to love, this is the kind of fizz Pamela describes as one to enjoy rather than pontificate over. 12% ABV, 75cl, vegetarian and vegan friendly.

La Rosita Rose Brut
A sparkling rosรฉ made mostly from old bush vine Grenache grown in Calatayud, some of the vines planted back in the 1930s. Strawberries and cream lead the nose, with a nougatty complexity alongside toasted brioche and rosehip. The palate is fleshy and fruit driven, balanced by crisp acidity that keeps it lively rather than sweet. Named after Pamela's niece. Lovely on its own, but also a proper gastronomic wine that pairs beautifully with smoked salmon and horseradish cream, oysters, or roast beef. 12.5% ABV, 75cl, vegetarian and vegan friendly.

La Pamelita (Sparkling Shiraz, labelled "La Ultima")
Spain's original sparkling red, made mostly from Shiraz with a splash of Garnacha. A vibrant garnet colour with a lively mousse, the nose is lifted and spicy, full of blackberries, mulberries and ripe figs, with wild thyme, musk and clove alongside hints of chocolate. The palate is full bodied and fruit driven with real length, backed up with soft bubbles and a touch of black pepper. Named after Pamela herself, "la Pamelita" being the nickname she far preferred to "Seรฑora Pamela" from her winemaking days in Chile. Best paired with spicy food, dark chocolate or mature cheese. 13% ABV, 75cl.

๐ŸŽฌ Week 6: Meet Pamela Geddes, Lobban Wines

We're wrapping up our suppliers campaign this week with someone special. Pamela Geddes is originally from Scotland and travelled the world honing her winemaking skills before settling in Barcelona, where she now runs Lobban Wines. She and Patrick have worked together for many years, and Aitken's is proud to be the only Scottish supplier of these wines.

We'll be sharing more posts through the week, but for now, here's what we're listing:
๐Ÿฅ‚ Babito Brut โ€” Traditional method sparkling, made from Xarel.lo and Macabeo. Crisp apple and zesty lemon with hints of nuttiness and pastry, aged 36 months on fine lees for a beautifully creamy texture.
๐ŸŒธ La Rosita Rose Brut โ€” Traditional method rosรฉ. Strawberries and cream on the nose with nougatty complexity, fleshy and fruit driven with crisp acidity to balance.
๐Ÿ‡ La Pamelita Sparkling Shiraz โ€” A unique sparkling red with a lifted, spicy nose of blackberries, mulberries and ripe figs, plus wild thyme, musk and cloves. Full bodied and fruit driven with great length.

All three are Produce of Spain, bottled in Catalunya.

We would be delighted to talk to you about Pamela's wines. Also very sadly this is her last year of wine making. So these are all the more extra special. They have the capacity to age well too due to the precision of her wine making techniques and quality of the fruit used. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿค—

We continue our Liberty Wines showcase with Gavin - promoting a new import of theirs and new to us too - The Salt River Sauvignon Blanc, Savage Wines ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Made by Duncan Savage, one of South Africa's most respected white winemakers, and previously winemaker at Cape Point Vineyards before launching his own label, Savage Wines, in 2011.

The fruit comes from around five vineyard sites around Stellenbosch, anchored by a roughly 35-year-old bush vine vineyard on the slopes of Bottelary, grown in granitic soil. Savage doesn't own vineyards himself, he works with growers he's built long-term relationships with, picking for freshness rather than full ripeness across multiple passes through harvest.

It's fermented in a mix of stainless steel tanks, concrete eggs and old barrels, spending around four months on lees before bottling and a further two months in bottle before release.

Forget grassy, gooseberry-driven Sauvignon Blanc, this is dry and saline, with green apple ๐Ÿ, fennel and waxy lemon ๐Ÿ‹ peel, textured rather than sharp and medium-bodied.

A wine for people who think they don't like Sauvignon Blanc. We love the sound of this!

100% Sauvignon Blanc, 13.5% ABV.

This week we follow up with Gavin of Liberty Wines for our supplier series - week 5 of 6.

Continuing with the theme of many wine importers and distributors at the moment there has been a trend of increasing sparkling wines, chill-able reds, more unusual grapes like Italian moscato bianco as a semi sparkling moscato d' asti having a come back, as well as Georgian orange wine. Here's the full run through of the wines Gavin showcased at our Wine Fair.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Raventรณs i Blanc, Blanc de Blancs โ€“ Catalonia family estate dating to 1497. Xarelยทlo, Macabeu and Parellada, aged on lees for 18 months.
๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น Casa Ferreirinha, Planalto Douro Branco โ€“ Crisp white from high-altitude Douro Valley vineyards, from the producer behind Barca-Velha, Portugal's most celebrated red.
๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท Les Caves de la Loire, 'Wally' Anjou Chenin Blanc โ€“ From a 160-grower co-op near Angers, established 1951. Fresh apricot and lime with hints of honey.
๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Savage Wines, Salt River Sauvignon Blanc โ€“ From winemaker Duncan Savage, Stellenbosch bush vine fruit, fermented in steel, concrete and old barrels for a saline, mineral style.
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ช Bedoba, Orange โ€“ Georgian orange wine from Kakheti, blending indigenous Rkatsiteli and Kisi grapes, partially vinified in traditional qvevri.
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Saveroni, Merlot & Corvina โ€“ Easy-drinking Veneto red blend, Merlot's soft fruit with Corvina's freshness, light and food-friendly.
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Cantina Atzei, 'Saragat' Monica โ€“ Stuart's pick of the reds โ€” Sardinian red, indigenous Monica grape, aged 6 months in French oak barriques.
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Fantini, Organic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo โ€“ Full-bodied organic red from Abruzzo, founded 1994. Gavin's pick for the perfect pizza wine.
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น G.D. Vajra, Moscato d'Asti โ€“ Low-alcohol, semi-sparkling Moscato from Piedmont, Vajra family estate established 1972.

Keep tuned as we've another reel from Gavin this week highlighting the Salt River Sauvignon Blanc which is new to Liberty Wines...more on this soon! But for now, here's the full list of the wines showcased in the video...
