Radio silence ...farm work is full on and not especially upbeat! How dreamy the Nigella and Orlaya look; something of a facade 🔥🥵

We are arable farmers as well as cut flower growers. This year peering into the undiluted impacts of another drought, slumping yield potential, sharply rising input costs (thanks Donald), a succession of indifferent governments, appalling global politics, climate change, and an economic relationship with buyers who call all the shots.

British farmers: producing essential food to the highest standards; yet considered expendable. How absurd.

P.S please check out and give your support on Saturday evening 🎶

Staccato weather, sharp diurnal fluctuations.🌡️Fierce sun then frost 🔥❄️

Harsh for seedlings finding their feet, so there's a backlog waiting to be transplanted. Are you getting fed up with the hokey-cokey of seed trays in and out of cover?! 🌱

We are watering and feeding at ground level for the benefit of wild birds as they struggle to forage on soil that has dried hard like concrete. 🪺🐦

Yes, LOTS of watering 🙄 and an epic flush of ranunculus in our hot polytunnel. First of the magical Colibri poppies. Beautiful flowers for making bouquets and supplying local florists.💐

Here they come...
Maybe my favourites of the whole year; scented narcissi and tall anemones from the polytunnel. With twirls of cornice foliage and a few tulips for good measure 😍

Dried flowers restocked . 💐
Fresh flowers for and Easter church services. ⛪ I'm taking cuttings, sowing, weeding, transplanting, crop walking, book keeping and chomping enough paracetamol to get through another lurgy.🤒 It's all go at Chickney 💪🏼

And hurrah, the ranunculus are budding up 🥳

Easter is rarely a time of rest for the farming and hospitality communities. Keep going, look after each other 🫂

Cutting again, earlier than last year.
Uplifting to have fresh anemones and scented narcissi on the menu 💐

Touch of frost, yeah? Just to make sure we don't lose our heads in All This Sunshine 😎❄️

While seeds germinate under glass, the soil will gradually warm and become a good bed for transplants. Over on the arable land, grabbing every slither of opportunity to crack on. Never easy on clay!

Springtime floristry tips:
🟢 For the longest vase life from hellebores, wait 'til their flowers have begun to drop stamens before you cut them. Sear the ends in boiling water. Score vertically along the stems and condition in water before arranging.

🟢 Tulips keep growing after being cut. Start them slightly shorter than other stems in the vase, they will more than just catch up in height

🟢 Sap from narcissi/daffs shortens the vase life of other flowers. Give narcissi several hours in separate water after cutting, so that the fresh sap comes out and the stem ends cure. Afterwards, you can arrange in fresh water with other species.

My thanks to Kathy and Helen for supporting us . The ethos, and the staying power of are remarkable

Back at base, we have hurtled and spluttered through January. A lot of activity 'under the bonnet', plenty of winter lurgy. Steady progress overall. The polytunnel contents are quietly bulking up as the day lengths stretch. Keep going 💪🏼

Frost and fir this week 🌲❄️
Thankful that the dahlias are lifted! I escaped my wellies to give a talk and floristry demo for Stebbing Garden Club. Wonderful hospitality 🙂

Advent approaches, and the (ever)green light for hanging festive decorations. Please get in touch if you'd like to order winter foliage or a wreath. Our materials are grown here on the farm, they work brilliantly in wreaths and Christmas decorations. We are registered and authorised by the Forestry Commission to issue relevant plant passports.

This year our evergreen trees have grown less than usual due to the 2025 drought. 😔 Nevertheless, we are able to offer Nordmann fir bundles cut from our mature trees. Soft to handle, with excellent needle retention. We also have a limited supply of 5kg conifer bundles, red dogwood stems, berried holly and ivy bunches 🎀

Please email to enquire or place your order [email protected]

We are a small team, and cut a set amount of winter foliage based on orders received. Please give as much notice as possible with your order, we will help if we can! 🙂

Hope you can avoid the worst of the winter lurgy...

Last crop before our winter foliage 🌲
Chrysanthemums grown in pots -we couldn't do it without the polytunnel! They chug along in the background for most of the year. From taking the cuttings, to staking, feeding and irrigating, transferring back under cover, dis-budding, harvesting, composting and over-wintering. High input!

Variety choices are agonising. Hats off to who produce so many options. We grow a mix of forms and colours which have vigour, and compliment each other. Flowering right through autumn 🍂💐

Strong stems, decent vase life, distinct scent and enough wiggles to look convincingly natural. Tell me you don't love them too?! 💚

Autumn equinox passes; already a touch of frost. The week to signal we really have clicked into autumn. 🍂 Cutting early means cold hands in dim first light. Arable tractoring continues, as we turn it all around. Linseed and wheat for 2026 🌱

The drought effect on plant productivity is long reaching. Beyond summer yields, our seedbeds are dry. Lower growth rates of conifer species are obvious, so perennial festive foliage will be impacted... a story for another day! 🎄
