Today is , and this week, our team have been out and about in Gateshead cleaning up litter left along the River Teams.

Working alongside Council, the team filled almost 12 bags of litter, including a huge amount of dog waste bags and other waste hanging from trees. They also uncovered several shopping trolleys in the river, which was now been reported to the council to be cleared.

It was a fantastic result, and great to see so much wildlife such as squirrels and birds, but also a reminder of how we all need to work together to keep our green spaces tidy and enjoyable for everyone.

We’re incredibly proud of our people for stepping up through our Just an Hour volunteering scheme, and proud of the partnerships that help us make a real impact.

Caring for our communities isn’t just for World Environment Day, it’s something we’re committed to every single day 💙

Just look at these beautiful bee orchids, which are very aptly named!🐝🌸

📸 They were snapped on our Dene Holme site in County Durham by our Conservation Advisor, Ian, where we’ve got over 100 common spotted orchids on site!

💚County Durham’s Hury Reservoir will benefit from a £15m project that also has ecological protection as a priority.

👷We’re carrying out the work over the next three years, increasing the capacity of the dam’s spillway and adding a new syphon system.

The project is being carried out by our partner, Esh-Stantec, following extensive work to ensure the area’s flora and fauna is protected.

🍄With more than 30 species of fungi, including wax cap mushrooms, close to the dam, Hury is internationally significant for fungi.

Working with internal and external ecological specialists, we’ve put a range of measures in place to protect a range of species – including moving mushroom-filled sections of land away from the working area!

You may remember our post about Thom in our Technical Support team in March, who was running 195 miles to raise funds to transform the outdoor space at Springmoor Grange Primary School in Spennymoor into something inspiring, engaging, and joy‑filled.

This week, Thom and over 10 volunteers from our Fresh and Wastewater teams visited the school as a part of our Just an Hour volunteering programme, and got straight to work! 💪

The brief? To create a dedicated footpath linking the existing playground to the site of a future outdoor classroom. The path needed to feel natural, something that would sit comfortably alongside the surrounding trees and wildflowers.

With the kind donation of bark chippings from DW & EE Conley (Conley Group), w**d control fabric donated by our partners ESH Group, two Distribution Maintenance Operatives and mini diggers they were able to create a woodland-style bark path, complete with a small offshoot leading to a log circle where children could gather for activities.

What a fantastic way of working together to supporting our local community, well done everyone 💙

🚜 We’re having an absolute blast here at the 20th anniversary of the Glendale Show - Glendale Agricultural Society Children’s Countryside Day!

We’re so proud to be helping hundreds of children from schools across the North East learn how to save water and protect the environment with some hands-on demos from our Water Efficiency and Bin the Wipe teams.💧🗑

Our refill tap is also keeping their hydration levels nicely topped up throughout the day as they discover the countryside first-hand and how they can help protect it for the future. 💚

✅A project to upgrade the water network at Sleepy Valley, near Tantobie, in County Durham has been completed.

💧The £220,000 investment will help protect the quality and reliability of water supplies for customers in the area.

In total, more than a kilometre of the local water network has been renewed, reducing the risk of bursts.

👷The project was carried out by our partner, United Infrastructure, and is part of a wider £74m investment in the water network across five years, which will see a total of more than 360km of older pipe replaced across the North East.

The hot weather from last week might be a distant memory right now, but water demand rose by 14% in one week, as our customers looked to stay cool and hydrated. 💦

Warmer weather naturally brings higher demand, but our teams have been working around the clock to keep the water flowing, by monitoring our networks, fixing leaks and encouraging customers to use water wisely.

Our highest demand was Bank Holiday Monday 25 May, when customers used 765 million litres of water as temperatures reached 30°C. That's the equivalent of 306 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

This week marks Volunteers' Week, an annual UK-wide campaign held from the first Monday in June to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers, and our teams have been out and about helping in our communities as a part of our Just an Hour volunteering programme.

Our Production team recently spent the day at Learning A New Way in Spennymoor, who are a non-profit organisation offering community wellbeing, holiday enrichment, youth groups, SEND after school groups.

From tidying up their overgrown garden to provide a safe, clean space for children during holiday clubs, to creating a sensory area to help with enrichment during the summer months, the team rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in.

Well done everyone! 👏
