🌽🐿️ It’s not only the deer enjoying our maize!

This little chap was VERY busy making his own preparations for winter… apparently our maize is firmly on the menu! 😂🌽

With the crop already looking rather thin this year, we’re not sure we can afford too many more customers like him! 🤣

At least someone’s impressed with this year’s crop… 🐿️❤️

🐄🎓 Calving season also means vet student season!

We’re incredibly fortunate to welcome veterinary students to the farm each year as part of their studies, giving them hands-on experience of dairy farming and calving.

Over the years, we’ve had some fantastic young people join us from universities including Edinburgh and Nottingham, and for the last two weeks we’ve had the pleasure of hosting

Neve has been an absolute joy to have on the farm. She has thrown herself into every aspect of farm life with enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and a great attitude throughout.

She is a real credit to both her family and her university, and we have no doubt she has a bright future ahead of her in the veterinary profession.

Thank you, Neve, for all your hard work over the past two weeks. Everyone at Chiddingstone Dairy wishes you the very best with the rest of your studies and your future career. 🐄❤️

🌽 We’re preparing for the worst maize harvest in our farm’s history.

With harvest getting close, the difference from field to field is huge.

🌽 On the lighter ground, the maize is extremely poor.
🌽 On the heavier ground, thankfully, it’s looking better.

Even the local wildlife are turning to the maize for food, with so little grass available elsewhere. 🦌

This crop is a vital part of feeding our cows through the winter, so a poor harvest has consequences long after the maize comes off the field.

Farming has good years and tough years — this is shaping up to be a particularly tough one.

🐮 3 calves were born that day!

One was even born in front of a large crowd, giving lots of people the privilege of seeing their first ever calf being born. 🥹🐄

🐄 TWINS! And a birth I’ve NEVER seen before! 😲

In all my years of farming, I have never seen this happen before!

Mum surprised us with twin baby girls ❤️🐄🐄 — but it was the arrival of the second calf that really left us speechless.

The second calf was coming out backwards, and before we knew it, she was literally dragging herself the rest of the way out! 😳

It was one of those moments on the farm where you just stand there thinking, “Did that really just happen?”

Thankfully, the most important part is that Mum and her two beautiful baby girls are all doing really well. ❤️

There’s never a dull day in farming, and even after years of delivering calves, they can still find new ways to surprise you!

🐔 Our pasture-reared chicken enterprise is well underway!

We’re still learning a huge amount as we go, but we’re really enjoying having the chickens on the farm and seeing how they get on out on pasture.

There’s plenty to learn, plenty to improve, and no doubt a few lessons still to come — but that’s all part of starting something new!
