Ana Gadín and Javier Mendoza set up Atrium Vitis back in 2012 right in Quiroga (one of the breathtaking bits of Ribeira Sacra). They own 12 plots (a total of 6ha), dedicated mainly to indigenous Galician grape varieties, which they vinify separately, plot by plot, thus preserving the essence of each vineyard. Ana and Javier have also discovered abandoned vines, hidden deep within the local overgrown forest. They are currently clearing part of this area by hand, to recover these old vines and to identify the grape varieties.
Silius Bucce comes from 60- to 80-year-old Godello vines planted on iron-rich soils near A Toca, an ancient Roman iron mine that lends the site its distinctive identity. Rather than relying on skin contact — as the name Bucce (“skins” in Italian) might suggest — Ana explores texture through an unconventional approach to lees ageing as she keeps the gross lees too meanwhile the wine matured in French oak for at least five months. It is a wine loaded with complexity without sacrificing precision, resulting in a gastronomic white with remarkable structure, layered flavours and the unmistakable character of Godello, lifted by a vibrant line of acidity and subtle mineral inputs.
Ana makes Lousa from a single vineyard planted more than 60 years ago on the laminated lousa slate soils that define this part of Ribeira Sacra. Made with Mencía, fermentation is carried out artisanally with manual punch-downs, favouring a gentle extraction that respects the fruit and the character of the site. The wine then spends nine months in French oak barrels. Pure fine expression, a cuvée that will reward you now, but that’ll also become exceptional in the future.
