I often talk about Tempest with customers as jamming hard on the switch to cans and off sales at the start of Covid lockdown. We will always have their beers in store as a result, but what’s the best before date?

Long weekends need wines that you can enjoy over a few hours rather than sooked out of the bottle like it’s running out. I just adore this wine, Crus du Sud from Gigondas, a region with exceptional heritage and stature in the Rhone, I love the richness of dark berry concentration. Fresh crunched wild mint notes balance with the aroma you get as you walk down into a vineyard cellar. The power of the fruit doesn’t make this aggressive, the silky blackcurrant, plum and bramble keep coming as you enjoy each glass and the hints of chocolate linger. A classic GSM of Grenache Noir / Syrah / Mourvedre that the Australian wine growers made their own style, this is as classic as they come without taking itself too seriously. It’s just a cracking wine this

Flowers couldn’t be more appropriate for this wine from Plaimont in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Indigenous grapes Gros Mensang and Petit Mensang are blended to create this Yura Jurançon Sec. A dry style wine with citrus freshness, juicy peach and mango backed with a solid acidity that pairs perfectly with fresh seafood in the sun.

The Olivers West Country Girl ( big bottle in the middle of the basket ) isn’t an ode to the Primal Scream song, it’s a love of place be that started from the 2024 harvest. This cider has more in common with a traditional method Sparkling wine like Cava or Champagne than it does with a pint of mass produced cider. Picked from their finest old orchards two summers ago the apples are treated like family, gently brought to be hand sorted and prepared for pressing before resting in vat with all their own natural yeasts working away. The juice isn’t ready though as it then has a secondary fermentation in bottle over time producing a great fizz. What I love about the Oliver’s cider is the depth of rich flavours and colours, the contrast to the light gold of the Perry from this deep bronzy big bottle is marked. At just over 5% you can savour this in the sun like any sparking wine but the diversity of food pairing is far more versatile. Bbq, cheese, olives, obviously pork
work as does surprisingly a bag of frazzles.

Lots of new has landed in the last few weeks with some old faves back like this Nightingale Cider Company Nightbird a perfect refreshing drink on muggy days. The season of apple picking is upon us but that’s really a story for another time as those apples have a long journey ahead.

Sunny vibes from Espania 🇪🇸

This is no standard Albarino from Bodegas Granbazán

With 4 years of aging since 2022 the wine has been carefully prepared in barrel for up to 6 months and then 12 months on the delicate lees before resting in bottle. The structure and flavour that’s generated is beyond impressive, the saline that typifies Albarino is still there but added too with light spice, floral and tropical notes. The core is still dry and crisp but the weight makes it feel like a warm blanket

Hope everyone is having a happy Monday, it’s all worth it when you are able to beat expectations for customers. That’s the real difference between shopping local and buying elsewhere. Independent SME’s be they wine shops, coffee shops or bakers all have set up to help bring something different to the table. Zero Dosage (Brut Nature) is a big deal in Europe and increasingly in the UK too. As we tend towards dryer still wine the traditional dosage of sugar after the second fermentation in sparkling wine is being questioned. Here the flavours are 100% from the blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a little Pinot Blanc, featuring a complex structure developed through fermentation in both large oak casks and stainless steel. Matured on the lees in bottle for 25 months, it offers a bone-dry profile with notes of dried pear, candied citrus, and a long, delicately spicy finish.

Germany produces wines from incredible centuries old vineyards that rival the Champagne and Burgundian soils and terroir. This .et.kauffmann wine is a perfect change to experience wine making at its best, naturally letting the fields and vines do the talking
