We had another huge arrival of distributor bin ends arrive this week, if you got lucky with the last round the star was really the oak bomb Chardonnay from Marlborist in New Zealand. This time though it’s more a constellation of white dwarfs, but last night we drank this red from Bierzo in Castilla y Leon - Spain. As a real bin end it retails for £30 but is half that for you in store. Raúl Pérez most importantly has a phenomenal beard, secondly he makes seriously fantastic w**es that are an expression of place and practice. The practice is as old as w**e, low intervention, whole bunches and the best fruit left to find its own path. In the glass it’s dense, brambles, currants, dark chocolate with tannin and acidity that balance wonderfully. The field blend of grapes has Garnacha to compliment the dominant Mencia, the sally sea breeze coming from the latter.

Don’t wait, these will not be on the shelves by Monday, we have Barolo’s and some Rhone masters to chose from too

Long weekends need w**es that you can enjoy over a few hours rather than sooked out of the bottle like it’s running out. I just adore this w**e, Crus du Sud from Gigondas, a region with exceptional heritage and stature in the Rhone, I love the richness of dark berry concentration. Fresh crunched wild mint notes balance with the aroma you get as you walk down into a vineyard cellar. The power of the fruit doesn’t make this aggressive, the silky blackcurrant, plum and bramble keep coming as you enjoy each glass and the hints of chocolate linger. A classic GSM of Grenache Noir / Syrah / Mourvedre that the Australian w**e growers made their own style, this is as classic as they come without taking itself too seriously. It’s just a cracking w**e this

Flowers couldn’t be more appropriate for this w**e from Plaimont in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Indigenous grapes Gros Mensang and Petit Mensang are blended to create this Yura Jurançon Sec. A dry style w**e with citrus freshness, juicy peach and mango backed with a solid acidity that pairs perfectly with fresh seafood in the sun.

The Olivers West Country Girl ( big bottle in the middle of the basket ) isn’t an ode to the Primal Scream song, it’s a love of place be ***r that started from the 2024 harvest. This c***r has more in common with a traditional method Sparkling w**e like Cava or Ch*****ne than it does with a pint of mass produced c***r. Picked from their finest old orchards two summers ago the apples are treated like family, gently brought to be hand sorted and prepared for pressing before resting in vat with all their own natural yeasts working away. The juice isn’t ready though as it then has a secondary fermentation in bottle over time producing a great fizz. What I love about the Oliver’s c***r is the depth of rich flavours and colours, the contrast to the light gold of the Perry from this deep bronzy big bottle is marked. At just over 5% you can savour this in the sun like any sparking w**e but the diversity of food pairing is far more versatile. Bbq, cheese, olives, obviously pork
work as does surprisingly a bag of frazzles.

Lots of new has landed in the last few weeks with some old faves back like this Nightingale C***r Company Nightbird a perfect refreshing drink on muggy days. The season of apple picking is upon us but that’s really a story for another time as those apples have a long journey ahead.
