IMPORTANT UPDATE: Bluetongue movement rules updated

Following consultation with the farming industry, the Scottish Government has updated movement rules for livestock in the Temporary Control Zone (TCZ) in south-west Scotland from 10 September.

From the farm… to the classroom… to the plate. 🥩

The Make it Scotch Meat Voucher Scheme is helping pupils across Scotland discover more about the food they cook and eat.

Through the scheme, schools can access funding to buy quality assured Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb and Prime Scottish Pork from their local Scotch Butchers Club member, giving pupils the chance to develop practical cooking skills while exploring Scotland's food and farming supply chain.

And we're not stopping at the ingredients.

We are recruiting four new Board members to help guide our organisation as we supports a resilient, sustainable and profitable Scottish red meat sector.

Candidates are being sought with knowledge and experience of pig production, together with:
🥩 an understanding of QMS and the wider Scottish red meat sector
🤔 ability to contribute effectively to the Board at a strategic level
💻 ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a range of stakeholders

Appointments are made on merit, with the aim of bringing together the right mix of skills, knowledge and experience.

We are holding four local Bluetongue update meetings across Dumfries & Galloway this week. With the BTV-3 situation continuing to develop and a Temporary Control Zone now in place, we will share the latest information, explain what it means for your business, outline what we are pressing for and answer questions from attendees.

Meetings will take place at:

• Monday 24 August, 7pm – Cressfield Hotel, Ecclefechan
• Tuesday 25 August, 7pm – Dumfries Auction Mart
• Wednesday 26 August, 7pm – Wallets Mart, Castle Douglas
• Thursday 27 August, 7pm – Wigtownshire Rugby Club

All farmers and crofters in the area are welcome, whether NFU Scotland members or not. There is no need to book, and non-members can find out more about our work and how to add their voice to NFU Scotland.

Hear directly from NFU Scotland on what we know, the latest position from the Scottish Government, what NFUS is pressing for and what happens next. Local auctioneers and veterinary practices will also join us to provide practical updates and answer questions.

The Scottish Government is strengthening bluetongue disease controls after a case was detected near Lockerbie.

A Temporary Control Zone has been put in place in an area around Dumfries and Galloway as a precautionary measure while further investigations are conducted on the source and extent of the disease.

All movement of livestock such as cattle, sheep and other susceptible ruminants in or out of the zone can now only take place under licence. There will be also be increased surveillance and testing of animals nearby.
