The next Jolly Toper tasting will be at 3pm on Sunday 5.7.26. Venue to be confirmed. Potentially it will be at Du Vin Bouchers (DVB) in Linlithgow, well worth the short train journey from Edinburgh if you’ve not yet been to this cosy little well stocked bistro, or DVB’s new sister bar Le Petit Raisin on Thistle St. If it’s the latter there will only be 16 spaces due to the size of the venue.
At least 5 drams poured blind £30.
Get in touch for further details or to arrange attending.

Sunday’s tasting at Lauri, thanks to proprietor Dom for his fortitude.
We started with Fuji Gotemba single malt brought to the tasting by Yuya, a one time regular at the tastings returning for the first time in eight years. Generally accepted by the assembled the distillery was built in 1973 by a combine of Seagrams, Chivas Brothers and Japanese brewer Kirin. The influences from the different companies can be seen in the variety of distillation methods as well as use of beer casks in maturation.
To follow - the first time at these tasting for independent bottler Concerto, a Glengarioch I first tried at Edinburgh’s fantastic Funk Booze Festival in January thanks to friend Ronnie’s enthusiasm. Very popular on the day this light, fruity and delicately sweet expression of potentially Scotland’s oldest distillery was thought by super-regular Andy to be one of the best drams he’d tried at the tastings.
Next thanks to regular Graham an outstanding example of Tormore bottled by owner Elixir for Edinburgh’s Whisky Trail. Again sweet but the overall effect was impressive with a great beginning, middle and particularly pleasing finish. Throughout the tasting the discussion of the benefits or otherwise to the dilution of the drams saw little consistency in opinion which shows how personal an experience drinking whisky can be. We look forward to future releases from the distillery.
Next was another from Elixir: this time a well aged oloroso cask from an anonymous Speyside distillery. Nearly everyone was impressed with the result of quality spirit in equally fine wood. Thanks to Kate for bringing this to our attention.
Finally having attended a Rare Finds tasting at Du Vin Bouchers me and the other half were taken with the “medium peated” mystery Islay single malt. It wasn’t just us as this bottling was a rare 100% success with everyone enjoying the peaty Parma violets nurtured in an ex-sherry cask.
Although not a themed tasting the thread joining the selection was whisky friends, all bottles having somehow come to the line up thanks to buddies suggesting or supplying them. Nice.
Next tasting Sunday 5.7.26 venue tbc, potentially Linlithgow or Edinburgh. Reservations now being taken.
