Visiting on Pantelleria island for a tasting of Zibibbo - dry Bianco & sweet Passito - from .agr.bonomoemanuela & Serraglia.

Vines are planted in shallow hollows to protect from the fierce wind - but at we saw a new form of windbreaks used to protect the vines. The alberello pantesco vine training system is also used to mitigate wind exposure & maximise water efficiency as rainfall is limited (450mm). Viticulture is dry farmed - no irrigation.

Dry stone walls also help protect crops from the wind - there are an incredible 8,000km of dry stone walls on the island.

Did you know that the world’s most exquisite capers come from Pantelleria island? We visited the Serraglia caper farm - where the owner’s father hand built all the terraces back in the 1960s. This is serious heroic agriculture! Caper harvesting is from May to September.

They are incredibly floral & pungent capers prized by the world’s chefs - their distinct flavour is due to the combination of volcanic soil & Mediterranean climate.

Pantelleria is an island of farmers rather than fishermen - the main crops are vines, capers, olive trees & citrus fruits.

The island is 9.3 miles long & 5.6 miles wide - just 32 square miles - with 7,127 inhabitants. Quite a few celebrities have homes here like the late Giorgio Armani and actress Carole Bouquet (who founded her own winery in 2005 - now owned by Sangue d’Oro).

More colour & flavour from Pantelleria island - dry & sweet (Passito) styles of Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) masterclass followed by dinner - who have a citrus garden with its own high wall to protect from the wind.

Interesting to learn that vines are now being planted at higher elevations on the island due to rising temperatures - so there are quite a few abandoned vineyard terraces nearer the sea. The highest elevation point on the island is Montana Grande (836 metres).

There are 19 wine producers & 345 vine growers on the island - with about 400 hectares of vineyards.

One of the main issues is that everything here is so hand crafted, but the younger Sicilian generation don’t want to stay on the island - so the wine producers are grateful to the hard working Romanian & Albanians who come here to toil in their vineyards.

Pantelleria island - an hour’s flight from Sicily - nearer Africa than Italy.

Our first two stops at the volcanic lake: Lake di Venere - and a typical vineyard in Pantelleria where Antonio Rallo of explained that bush vines are kept low to protect them from the fierce wind 💨

99% of the vineyards here are planted with Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) used to make floral dry whites & sensational sweet Passito wines.

Very high quality 100% Carricante white wines from mature vintages - and their red Nerello Mascalese blend shows promise.
