Today, we’ve met the first three of this year’s ten vet students who will be here for a week’s “work experience” each. This week’s students are from Edinburgh’s The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

Vet schools require students to complete a lot of weeks seeing how various animal species are managed. Dairy cows, horses, cats and dogs, rodents, sheep, pigs … almost anything !

Some students may choose alpacas and that’s where we can come in.

They’re here to learn about management and handling, and they’ll shadow us for the week.

Today has been rather showery but we’ve been busy collecting faecal samples and tomorrow we’ll be continuing to look at alpaca breeding matters.

Our first 2026 cria has arrived ! Auld Mill Cilla was born weighing 8.4kg after a 350 day gestation.

Her mother is first-time mum Auld Mill Shadow, and her father is Fangdale Jet. Cilla and Shadow are doing really well. They are very well bonded.

Cilla is our 200th cria with our very first births having been Archie and Angus in 2005 !

Alpacas are herd animals and must live in groups of at least three for their own wellbeing. In addition, once male alpacas reach the age of around 12 months, they must live apart from females.

So, what happens if just one male cria is born in a year into an otherwise all female herd ? Well, he’s going to need at least a couple of buddies to live with !

These two boys are four year old Auld Mill Sandy and one year old Auld Mill Brew and they’ve just moved home to become best friends with a male cria born last year into a wee all-female herd in Aberdeenshire.

They’ve settled well in their lovely new home with their new paddock-mate.

We’re looking forward to keeping up with them in their new lives.

Visitors, including Alpaca Trekkers, often marvel at how the female herd are so very content to have us amongst them. They largely ignore us as they carry on with their day.

This is exactly how we want them to be. We want Alpaca Trekkers and others to be able to see them doing their own thing. And, at this time of year when births are imminent, we want the pregnant females to be relaxed in our presence and to be showing us how they’re feeling.

This has been a toenail-trimming morning.

Alpacas stand on the flats of their feet on a tough fleshy pad. They have two toes on each foot, each with a nail.

The nails are all trimmed on shearing day and checked regularly in between times. If they need trimmed, we’ll do them.

It’s a two person job - one to steady and balance the alpaca and one to lift the foot and do the trimming.

The photo here shows the underneath of a foot. You can see the pointed tips of the nails extending just beyond the foot pad and the clippers are lined up to take a little bit off the side of the nail.
