Ⓜ️COW OF THE WEEKⓂ️

Hawbank Citizen Meg
No.4302

“Choose a Meg, I like Megs” - our foot trimmer Gareth 😄

But Gareth doesn’t just come to see his favourite cows, he plays an important part in keeping our herd healthy and comfortable🐄🩺

Our cows have their feet trimmed twice a year: once at around 100 days in milk, and again before they are dried off.
So, why do cows need their feet trimmed?
A cow’s hooves are constantly growing! So regular professional trimming helps maintain the correct shape and balance of the hoof, removing excess or damaged horn and helping prevent problems such as overgrown claws, sole ulcers and other lameness issues. Good hoof health is really important for dairy cows. Comfortable cows are more likely to walk normally, visit the feed area, lie down and get up comfortably, and generally go about their daily lives as they should 🐄❤️ The trimming is preventative care so we aren’t waiting for a cow to become lame before looking after her feet

Meg had twins the first time she calved 👯‍♀️
Having twins is relatively rare in cattle, particularly for a young heifer

💙💛 Happy Yorkshire Day! 💛💙
Yorkshire has a farming heritage that’s second to none, and we’re just a small part of that story.
Here at Bower House Farm, we farm on land that forms part of the historic Bolton Abbey Estate. Long before our family milked cows here, this landscape was shaped by the Augustinian canons of Embsay Priory, founded in 1120, who later moved to Bolton Priory. Over the centuries, the monks transformed woodland into productive farmland, managed livestock and helped establish the agricultural landscape that still defines this beautiful corner of Yorkshire today.
Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, these lands passed through generations of ownership before becoming part of the Bolton Abbey Estate, with many of the former monastic holdings evolving into the family farms we know today.
For generations, Yorkshire’s limestone soil has provided lush green fields that have produced some of the finest milk in the country. While farming has changed enormously over the last 900 years, one thing that remains the same is a dedication to caring for the land, looking after our animals and producing great local food.
Every bottle you fill from our milk vending machine supports a Yorkshire family farm that’s proud to continue this long tradition of farming in the Dales. Thank you for supporting local agriculture and helping keep Yorkshire’s farming heritage alive.
Happy Yorkshire Day from everyone at Embsay Milk Shed! 🐄🥛
💙💛

🤩 COW OF THE WEEK 🤩

Goes again to Hawbank Spock Honey
No.632

What a special cow! Not only does she go back to the original Honey cow with a pedigree of continuous VG and excellent classified cows she also produces the best milk in Yorkshire 🏆

The comments sheet from the judges brought tears to our eyes, it was a surreal moment to hear how they described her milk especially when it was a class open to all breeds. As a Holstein she was bred for her volume of milk unlike the Chanel Island and Native breeds who are bred to have high quality and thus a lower quantity of milk. Nevertheless she goes against her breed standard and surpasses the standards for Jersey cows by producing milk that tested up to 8.11% butterfat ❤️🥛

Andrew and Louise Louise Ayrton stepped up to the occasion to receive the trophy on the Wednesday morning as I was occupied with showing cows

🏆 We were awarded the Arla foods perpetual trophy for the best milk from an individual cow

Thank you Great Yorkshire Show and Yorkshire Agricultural Society for hosting yet another fantastic show. We will absolutely be back again next year
