Last week we brought home our very first Dutch Spotted tup! He’s just a lamb but one of the calmest sheep I’ve come across which is one of the traits I’ve learnt to look for when buying new stock. Two years ago we bred a few Jacob X Dutch Spotted lambs and retained the ewe, who will be going in with our new addition this year as well as our non-pedigree Jacob ewe and a couple of other ewes. Really looking forward to lambing next year already!

There has been a lot of change in our flock recently!

Last week, Soyland Bentley left our flock and went to his new home. Bentley was my 2024 homebred ram. Last summer, he came 1st in the Jacob ram lamb class at Emley Show and he has been impressing me ever since. He is grass fed and is calm natured and I can’t wait to see how he does in his new flock. I really am very proud of him!

We also recently sold three of our aged ewes at our local market.

Lambing season round-up!

Super happy with this year's lambs, all sired by Gobaith Hurricane. They're 6-8 weeks old now and are shaping up nicely. This year, again, there was a large gap between lambing (the first 2 lambed a day early and then we didn't have anything for 9 days)! I'm already thinking about using raddle next year to try and predict individual due dates as accurately as possible. We're also hopefully going to get them scanned next year so we'll know exactly what we're expecting. The lambs are growing so quickly, and with any luck, we'll finally get some rain in the next week and the grass will start to grow!

Mother and daughter

Gloria is one of our original two ewes who were originally bought as companions for a horse, who form the foundation of our flock. Though she is not a pedigree Jacob, her forward-facing horns, bouffant and personality give her so much character. She is so friendly, always coming to us and asking for a scratch. She is definitely one of our best ewes and is a great mother, giving everything to her lambs. Here she is with her 2024-born Jacob X Dutch Spotted ewe lamb.

With lambing fast approaching, we're making sure the ewes are well looked after with plenty of hay and corn. We're expecting a record number of lambs born into our little flock this year! There are still quite a few weeks to go, but this weekend it felt like the countdown really has begun!

On the 12th day of Christmas…

We woke up this morning, as many others will have done, to snow! We were straight out to see the sheep and give them some hay, and they were very hungry. We’ll be back outside checking on them throughout the day as the snow continues to fall 🌨️

We had a successful trip to the JSS Northern Region Show & Sale in Skipton a few weeks ago. I was on the look out for a new ram to use later this year and spotted an impressive, yet friendly tup. Temperament is really important to us, as calm, friendly sheep breed calm, friendly lambs. I am so excited to have a new bloodline in the Soyland flock, from none other than the Gobaith flock! It won't be long until he will be going in with the pedigree Jacobs in preparation for Easter lambing!

105th Emley Show

Well... what can I say? What an amazing day! Yesterday, we took 3 sheep to our first show of the year underneath the Emley Moor mast. Soyland Bentley, our ram lamb, placed 1st in the Jacob ram lamb class! Jessie also entered the shearling ewe class, placing 3rd and Rita entered the aged ewe class, placing 4th! We're so pleased with the results and this year the weather was on our side!
As always, we'd like to thank our breed judge, R. Chapman, the Emley Show sheep secretary Sally and the entire team for such a well-organised and enjoyable show. Roll on the next one!

The light at the end of the tunnel! After a really tough lambing season, we're really happy with how this year's lambs are looking. We have both pedigree Jacobs and Jacob X Dutch Spotted lambs (albeit only one ewe lamb!). Now it's time to start preparing for show season!

Here comes the sun ☀️ I love watching the lambs out on the spring grass in the sunshine, long may it continue!
