The Hangry Coeliac

The Hangry Coeliac I’ve been coeliac now for 9 years and can safely say I’ve spent a large portion of that either hangry or missing out on tasty goods.

Therefore I want to share all my gluten free finds in Scotland and further afield.

📍Dash of Bari - Forfar

Today for lunch we visited Dash of Bari in Forfar that has recently been opened up by

We decided to share a mix of things so settled on the ex-dairy goat kebab, steak toastie and the chicken & naga loaded fries. Everything tasted absolutely delicious.
The steak, mozzarella and applewood smoked toastie was served on toasted warburton’s tiger bread. The chicken & naga fries were definitely my favourite, the naga sauce was so flavoursome, the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. The fries are curved so hold lots of extra sauce and tasted delicious, we couldn’t stop picking at them. My 10 month definitely approved of the chips and goat kebab.

There was a full cabinet of homemade gluten free goodies as well and a token gesture to the non gluten free people at the bottom with packaged biscuits if they’d prefer that. Nice touch when gluten free patrons are normally used to the prepackaged snacks. We both took some of Holly’s bakes home as had no room left at the time - millionaire brookie and mint rocky road for me. My sister opted for the pistachio & lime cake and the salted caramel brownie.

My sister and I are both coeliac so it’s great when you can go somewhere for food and order the majority of items off the menu. They offer a main menu of curries and grilled meats and are open for sit in till 9pm and available for takeaway on just eat.

Picking up a baby pram in Stirling called for trying the highly recommended

Their menu is all marked up with allergens and the waitress seemed very knowledgeable when I asked about a separate fryer.

I opted to have the fillet steak ciabatta with a side of gluten free macaroni. Both were very tasty.

I would definitely recommend visiting here if you are in the area and would suggest booking as we were lucky to get a table the day we visited.

📍Lass O’Gowrie - Errol, Scotland

In December I won a competition for free lunch as I named the most food items on their December specials menu.

I had the Balmoral Blazer which was a chicken, ham, haggis, black peppered cheddar and chipotle toastie with a side of cheesy soup. The toastie was so good I went back again for another one.

I had the carrot cake to follow and also took home a couple of slices of their gluten free traybakes. Being coeliac and having more than 1 option of cake is the perfect excuse to take an extra bit of cake home for later.

The Lass O’Gowrie have their menu all marked up and if you ask they are always happy to tweak menu items to accommodate. They always have a big range of cakes with atleast 4-5 gluten free options.

📍Usige - Murthly, Scotland

Gluten free brie wedges followed by chicken Kiev. For our wedding anniversary we visited Usige in Murthly. Their menu is all marked up with gluten free options. And they have a separate fryer to offer coeliac safe fried items.

This is the first time I’ve had a chicken Kiev since diagnosis over 10 years ago and it did not disappointed, it was filled with loads of melted garlic butter.

📍Playa Blanca - Lanzarote

1&2. lanis Marina - this is situated at the entrance to the Marina, we shared nachos and I had the fajitas, I took my own wraps as had seen on reviews they served hard tacos with the gluten free fajitas
3&4. El Bodegon - this tapas restaurant was amazing, so much could be gluten free. I would highly recommend it if visiting Playa Blanca
5. Asiatico - the majority of the menu could be made gluten free. I’m always one for ‘sharing’ 2 options
6&7. Mumbai Masala - amazing Indian at the end of the marina. Gluten free pakoras, only thing missing was gluten free naan bread.
8&9. Restaurante Puerto Blanco - there was always a queue to get a table at this restaurant, the prawn starter was lovely and the meat paella was amazing, big extensive gluten free menu.
10. Isla Bonita - everything could be made gluten free, the kebab was so tasty and just what we wanted for a ‘simple dinner’ on our last night.

We stayed at Dreams Playa Dorada in a premium room. There was a gluten free station in the buffet restaurant with bread, crackers, cakes and cereal. With a separate toaster as well. All of the food in the buffet was labelled as well.

📍River House, Stirling

On Saturday we went to after going pram shopping.

It was my first time visiting and it certainly will not be the last. It is a beautiful setting on the outskirts of Stirling, the restaurant is beautifully decorated and has lovely water features outside.

Separate gluten free menu, separate fries and little free from flags what more could a coeliac girl want?

I had the croque monsieur with fries and a side of tempura chicken. Both were delicious and I’m already looking forward to going back again.

They are part of the Cawley Hotel Group and have several other venues across Scotland so I would definitely check them out for a gluten free treat.

📍 Quesada - Costa Blanca

We recently had a villa holiday in Quesada. The area for great for gluten free and I’ve included the food I remembered to photograph.

Photo 1&2: Bellisimo, an Italian restaurant that sat on the edge of La Marquesa golf course, their menu was all marked up with allergens. I had the chicken Alfredo and shared a garlic & cheese pizza with my sister.

Photo 2&3: Yoku, this was by far my favourite restaurant whilst in Quesada. A lovely Asian restaurant with an allergen marked up menu….what are the chances. I had the scezhan chicken and my husband and I shared fried rice & pad thai.

Photo 4: there were loads of Indian restaurants in the Quesada area, we chose to eat at Punjabi Paradise based on reviews. I had the butter chicken, vegetable rice and a portion of chips. Everyone enjoyed their meal here.

Other recommendations:
Rodizio Restaurant, an all you can eat bbq/meat restaurant, where you helped yourself to sides and they served meat on long skewers until you were full.
Bar & kitchen El Olivia where we shared a paella between 6 of us, they also offered gluten free tapas.
Restaurant Goyos, we ate here the late night as just fancied something a bit simpler, I had a half chicken & baked potato. This restaurant was very busy. Their menu wasn’t marked but they did have an understanding of gluten free.

There were multiple supermarkets within Quesada and I was able to try some snacks that aren’t available here in Scotland.

I would definitely recommend this area for a gluten free villa holiday.

📍Coffee & Toffee - Torrevieja
es is a gluten free bakery located in Torrevieja.

Whilst we were holidaying in Quesada we paid a visit to Coffee and Toffee to pick up some gluten free treats.

I picked a ham & cheese pastry for lunch…it’s the first savoury pastry I’ve had since being coeliac that actually had that buttery flakey pastry.
The sweet treats I took home were a cinnamon roll, chocolate roll and a chocolate croissant.

My sister visited on a separate occasion and brought me back the eclair and a chocolate croissant.

I literally could have said one of everything please. Definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby.

📍New Food Gluten Free - Rome 🇮🇹

100% gluten free bakery on the river edge by Trastevere.

The savoury and sweet choices are unreal. I couldn’t see past the pizza and suppli. The bignè’s were absolutely divine, I had the cream and chocolate fillings.

They also have a restaurant near Vatican, but we didn’t get a chance to visit.

📍Mama Eat Roma - Rome 🇮🇹

A gluten free restaurant in the Trastevere area. They offer both gluten free and a ‘normal’ menu.

We shared the deep fried mozzarella to start, I had a gluten free pasta for main course and finished with the deep fried pizza crusts topped with Nutella.

📍Antojitos - Universal City Walk, Orlando

Anywhere that offers tableside guacamole is a hit with me.

We shared tacos and quesadillas, the menu is all marked up with gluten sensitive but they do use a shared fryer so you have to be careful with that if you are coeliac.

After the server took our order a different member of staff came over to state it wouldn’t take a little longer due to it being an allergy order.
