Why do some kitchens feel like home?

It’s often more than what you see. Colour, light, proportion and layout all play a part in shaping how a space feels — and how naturally we move, gather and live within it.

The empty nest isn't quite what it used to be.

More adult children are staying at home for longer, and it's changing what a family kitchen needs to do.

What was once a space for two is now feeding, hosting and accommodating a household that spans generations; different schedules, different habits, different needs, all under one roof.

A kitchen built for a fuller nest needs more than just extra worktop space. It needs storage that works for more than one routine, layouts that let people cook and eat independently, and a design that can flex as the household changes shape over time.

This month we’re exploring what this shift means for kitchen design, and how to plan a space that keeps pace with a busier, multi-generational home. Read more on the blog: https://bit.ly/3SMJLek

Inside our Peak District workshop, we use modern machinery, including CNC cutting, where it helps us achieve greater precision and consistency.

But when it comes to the details that give a kitchen its character, human skill still matters.

Finishing is done by hand. Every surface is carefully considered. Every piece passes through skilled hands before it becomes part of a finished kitchen.

Modern precision. Traditional craftsmanship. Both have their place.

Some things never go out of style.

Oak cabinetry continues to be an unwavering choice across both contemporary and classic kitchens, offering a calming ambience whatever the wider style. Use it on internals for a hint of warmth, go full oak for something more traditional, or mix it with a painted finish for the best of both.

Media walls are increasingly favoured for their ability to declutter and integrate technology into the home.

Spanning the back of this room, the bespoke media wall anchors the space. Finished in Hazelwood, it features tactile reeded back panels, integrated LED lighting, and a mix of open and closed cabinetry — open shelving for sculptural ceramics and glassware, closed storage for everything entertainment-related that doesn't need to be seen.

The seamless TV integration turns it into both a visual focal point and a genuinely functional zone.

Texture, without saying too much.

We're big fans of reeded glass, used here to break up a run of solid cabinetry and bring a softer, more tactile texture into the space.

Once your design is agreed, your kitchen begins its journey through our workshop in the Peak District, where dozens of experts bring it to life by hand.

Around 75 kitchens are in production at any one time, each with its own paperwork file, tracked by name and number from start to finish.

Many of our cabinets and islands start life as solid hardwood, cut and shaped for your exact design, not pre-cut pieces. It's how we stay truly bespoke, with fewer delays and no reliance on long supply chains.

We've invested in technology to support our craftspeople, but the cutting, planing, sanding, painting and finishing is still done largely by hand.

As a child nutritionist and mum of two, Charlotte Stirling-Reed really does live in her kitchen. She wanted an open-plan space that could work just as well for family life as it does for her work.

Every detail was thoughtfully shaped around their lives, from clever storage to the generous island.

See some of our favourite features from Charlotte’s kitchen.
