Shillingford Organics Shillingford Organics 'in tune with the seasons' We have organic hens on the farm, which produce wonderful, tasty, organic eggs.

Shillingford Organics is all about growing seasonal, organic vegetables, salad, herbs and fruit to give local people the opportunity to buy great, healthy, freshly harvested produce, which is free from harmful pesticides and chemicals. ☀ August News 2026 ☀ An unprecedented summer and planning for the future.

Months without rain, temperatures around 30°C and persistent drying winds. This has been one of our most difficult summers.

💦Hand-watering in dusty fields
🔆Curly kale, faring well against the odds
🐇Running hare
🍎Discovery apples — first of the season
🍅A gorgeous mix of heritage tomato varieties
🔥Rig of Fire chillies — seriously spicy and full of flavour
🥗Morning salad harvest
💕 Uchiki Kuri squash

Yields are down across the board, especially leafy greens like chard, spinach and kale. However it's not all bad news; our mediterranean veg from our polytunnels is doing well, as are our outdoor courgettes, potatoes, onions and beans. The apple trees are laden with fruit, and there's some lovely big squash in the field.

Flea beetles thrive in the hot and dry weather and are drawn to tender young brassicas. The acres of baby kale, cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are rich pickings. On top of that, the Cabbage White butterflies are out in force; their caterpillars teamed with flea beetles have almost completely wiped out two successions of radish.

That said, brassicas are hardy plants and thanks to round-the-clock irrigation many of the seedlings that survived the early onslaught have established and should pull through ok.

Deer, rabbits, hares, voles, as well as pigeons, pheasants and crows have all been spotted having a nibble. Annoying but we can't really blame them!

Niki has trialled growing outdoor Borlotti beans this year. A Sicilian staple, they are well suited to the heat and have done really well. Due to the high price of the seed, Niki has saved the seed from most of what we've grown this year and we expect this will be a very useful crop in the future as we adapt to hotter summers.

We'd like to thank all our customers for supporting local food and local people during this difficult period. Please stay in touch!

Also, thank you to our amazing Growers who have persisted throughout the hot, dry weather this summer. They've irrigated day and night to keep crops alive. We're all hoping for steady rain through Autumn!
