It’s National Cheese Day and Devon Day, so what could be better than a picture of our Master Storeman in the cheese store, surrounded by all the cheeses made right here on our Devon farm?

Tony, our Master Storeman, has worked at Quicke’s for over 40 years! He came to the farm as a young boy with his mother, Val, who made butter and ice cream, packed cheese and served in the shop. His father, Barry, ran the cheese dairy for many years.

Tony takes care of our cheese almost from birth, through maturing and grading, to getting it packed up and sent to our customers. He is one of our hidden heroes, knowing our cheese stock, all those months of preserved sunshine, like the back of his hand.

Join us on Sunday 7th June at 10am here on the farm, for a fascinating talk and guided farm walk exploring the world of the endangered White-Clawed Crayfish and the work being done to protect them here in Devon.

Threatened by habitat loss, pollution, disease and competition from the invasive American Signal Crayfish, White-Clawed Crayfish populations have dramatically declined across the UK. Our stretch of the River Creedy is now considered one of the species’ last remaining habitats in Devon.

We have been working alongside Wildwood Devon and the Saving Devon’s Native Crayfish project to help protect and preserve this remarkable species within Devon’s rivers and waterways.

The walk with Mary Quicke and Stacey Tonkin from Wildwood Devon will offer a chance to learn more about the crayfish, the challenges they face, and the conservation efforts taking place across the landscape surrounding the River Creedy.

What a fabulous first day at the Devon County Show ! 🧀

We had a busy day on our cheese stand, enjoyed some great chats, had our photos taken for the local press and won a handful of gold awards for our cheeses, including Reserve Champion for our Goat’s Milk Clothbound Cheese. We even spotted Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh admiring our cheese!

We’ll be back in the Food & Drink Tent from 9am–6:30pm tomorrow.

It’s the third Saturday of the month already, which means Megan is at Exeter Quayside Farmers’ Market with a selection of our handcrafted clothbound cheeses and our whey butter. She’ll be there until 1pm, alongside many other delicious local food and drink producers!
