LAST DAY AT TALLOIRES BEFORE A MOVE TO BEAUJOLAIS HQ AT CHATEAU DE VAUX.

What a glorious afternoon to enjoy on the banks of Lake Annecy. Before we head off to Gamay and Chardonnay country, a little bit of northern Rhône Viognier to take the edge off our departure tomorrow. It has been great to enjoy a few days off before a full fortnight's worth of wine making in Beaujolais. Santé!

Pre-wine making break at Talloires (Annecy). Some much-needed rain. Hopefully there will be some left for Beaujolais! As from next week, Chris Piper will be sending regular vintage updates from Beaujolais! Bon weekend!

We have just received an e-mail from Lawsons Dry Hills in Marlborough (New Zealand) with a photo of their Gewurztraminer vineyards under a blanket of frost.

The 2024 is a delicious wine with classic notes of lychee, cardamon, lemon and rose petals on the nose. The palate is round, rich and super concentrated with all the classic varietal flavours you’d expect. Just off-dry with the hint of sweetness beautifully balanced by a gentle acidity. A delicious and memorable wine!

Wine journailst and reviewer gave it 92/100 points: "A classic bouquet of intensity and freshness, floral and fruit-centric with exotic scents of fresh apples and pears, white pepper and quince. There’s a whisper of ginger and white nectarine, then a minerality showing as stone. Just dry on the palate, with a silky texture, core fruit flavours of pomaceous fruits and white nectarine, plenty of exotic spices, and a definitive acid line with a saline flick on the finish. Delicious and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2028" At £14.65 a bottle it's a ridiculous bargain!

To celebrate Peter Pengelly's 30th year working with us at Christopher Piper Wines, we held a lunch at the Fat Otter in Ottery St. Mary. Peter has been our warehouse manager for over seven years and prior to that, was deputy manager. Peter's colleaugues joined him in a lot of reminiscing over a few glasses of wines from producers specialising in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir! One thing that we learnt was that the average number of years (per person) who have worked at CPW is twenty-three! Amazing. They are a truly fabulous bunch of people.

A NOTICEABLE INCREASE IN UK STAYCATIONS

According to the results of AA Media’s 2026 UK Leisure Travel Survey, 37% of people are hoping to go on more staycations this year.
The survey is refreshingly positive picture for UK tourism. Although cost of living pressures are a major influence on travel decisions, it is clear that travel is still a very important part of people’s lives, but they are adjusting their approach as to where they should go. It would appear that shorter, more local holidays are a key driver.

When it comes to making decisions on booking holidays, almost eight in 10 (79%), consumers are re-modelling their travel decisions in 2026 rather than cutting back.
Naturally, value for money remains the most important consideration for consumers when deciding where to go on holiday but
1) 43% are choosing UK destinations over overseas holidays this year.
2) Over half (56%) are opting for shorter, more frequent breaks
3) Almost half (48%) are wanting to explore more of the UK.

When it comes to the final spend
1) 25% expect to spend more on memorable experiences closer to home
2) If consumers have a bit more to spend on holidays, they are focused on better accommodation (63% and taking more trips (63%).

3) 50% of consumers are more than prepared to up their spend on dining out.
The UK’s most popular destinations in terms of travel and hospitality bookings are:
1) The North of England (45%)
2) The South West (41%)
3) Scotland (38%)
Favourite holidays are coastal breaks (55%), countryside escapes (46%) and camping/ caravan trips (21%).

The AA survey also pinpointed ‘trust’ as a very important part in booking decisions:
1) 92% consider are strongly influenced by quality ratings and user reviews with 60% taking both into consideration.
2) 51% prefer to book directly through the hotel’s or property’s own website rather than via online travel platforms.

Ultimately, the fast-changing world we live in, also plays an important part in helping tourists decide where to go. These would include the soaring European temperatures and the consequential wildfires and 38˚C plus temperatures. The increasing delays being experienced at airports and ferry ports along with the escalating costs of flights and Cross Channel ferries are also a major negative.

ROSEMARY PETERS (RIP)

It is with considerable sadness that we have just learnt of the passing of Rosemary Peters, one of Christopher Piper Wines' original team members. Rosemary ran the orders office at SIlver Street in the early 1980's and was very much part of that amazing original 'family' that helped create our business. Rosemary's husband, Jonathan, was our first warehouse manager and they were a formidable team. Jonathan can be seen on the right of Rosemary, photographed at our 1988 Beaujolais Nouveau supper at the New Fountain Inn.

Our sincere condolonces go to Jonathan and their son, Nathan.

On a beautifully sunny evening at Lulworth Cove, in the Purbecks (Dorset), we celebrated a birthday with family and friends at the excellent Lodge Hotel and Restaurant. What else could we toast this occasion with but a glass of Champagne Gremillet's Ambassadeur cuvée. A great way to start the evening and also an important link with the Lodge, who have been using Gremillet since it opened! Happy days!

South African Ambassadors of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Andries Burger is the longest-serving winemaker in Elgin where he has been in charge of winemaking since the Cluver's maiden vintage in 1997. A graduate of Stellenbosch University with a BSc degree in oenology and viticulture, Andries has helped Paul Clüver gain a reputation for establishing Elgin as one of South Africa’s leading wine regions as well as a winery synonymous with the crafting of premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that are recognised as among the country’s finest.

A fervent disciple of the ethos and terroir-driven approach of Burgundy, Andries has worked at various wineries in this ancestral home of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, including a stint at Domaine Comte Senard in Aloxe-Corton under the watchful eyes of owner Phillipe Senard.

Recognised for his meticulous approach to winemaking and a commitment to expressing the unique Elgin terroir in his wines, Andries is a senior member of the Cape Winemakers Guild, a collective body representing the leading and most respected winemakers in the country.

Having won numerous local and international awards for Paul Clüver Family Vineyards’ wines, Andries is committed to the estate’s goal of making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines proving that South Africa’s Western Cape is capable of making some of the best renditions of these noble varieties in the world.

“Deeper, more compote-fruit timbre than the Village Chardonnay. Membrillo, mirabelle, apple jam, a touch of red fruit. No oakiness but a slight minty fragrance that perhaps comes from oak? Mellifluous in every sense of the word”

Paul Clüver, Clüver Prieur Colline du Matin Chardonnay 2024 Elgin (17/20)
“A collaboration with Martin Prieur of Burgundy’s Domaine Jacques Prieur. Fermented and aged for 10 months in French oak barrels (50% new).
The ripe fruit leaps out of the glass – stone fruit and a little mandarin/tropical, but with a distinct mineral-stony edge and hints of barrel spice. Delicious mouthful of fruit then the energy takes over bringing real intensity to the palate and some subtle spicy, nutty notes.”and elegant.”
