Before it made wh**ky, this building spun cotton — a mill built in 1785, standing on the River Teith for nearly two centuries before anyone thought to distil here.

Deanston still generates its own electricity, from a turbine on the same river. It's the only distillery in Scotland that can run entirely on power it makes itself.

The old weaving sheds became the warehouses. The same cool, damp air that once kept cotton thread from snapping now does the same job for maturing spirit — a building that never really changed jobs, just what it was quietly holding.

For fifty years, GlenAllachie's wh**ky went into other people's blends. Built in 1967 at the foot of Ben Rinnes, it made spirit that carried someone else's name on the label — never its own.

Then in 2017, Billy Walker bought it. He'd already done this twice before, reviving BenRiach and GlenDronach with the same bet: sherry casks, matured on site, no shortcuts. Most of the industry had moved away from that kind of patience.

The first single malts under GlenAllachie's own name appeared in 2018. By 2021, the 10 Year Old was named World's Best Single Malt. In March 2025, the 12 Year Old took the same title again — two global wins in four years, on a house style nobody else was betting on.

Where art meets wh**ky.

Last week, we set up a booth at Sathorn 11 Art Space for an evening where both spirits and art shared the same room.

Guests sampled single malts from around the world, surrounded by original artwork.

It's a fitting pairing. Both are things people collect for the same reasons: craftsmanship, story, and value that reveals itself over time.

£130 in 1971. £270,000 today.

Angus Kerr, a Surrey pensioner, bought a cask of Glenrothes single malt back in 1971, hoping it would help pay for his children's school fees one day. He doesn't even drink Scotch.

The company he bought it from went bust a few years later. He lost contact, assumed the money was gone, and moved on with life, kids, and everything else that gets in the way.

Decades later, out of nowhere, a Glasgow company contacted him, saying he owed storage fees on a barrel he'd almost forgotten existed. That barrel turned out to be the oldest of its kind known to still exist, containing enough for roughly 287 bottles, and tasting experts have called the 57-year-old wh**ky "absolutely fantastic."It's now going up for sale at £270,000.

"I don't drink Scotch," Kerr told BBC Radio Surrey. "If I did, I'd be looking around for something that was £18, no more."

Most wh**ky warehouses in Scotland are built up, high enough to keep the sea from ever reaching them. Bowmore's No.1 Vaults was built down into it instead.

Part of the structure sits below the level of Loch Indaal outside — one wall doubles as the town's own sea wall. It's been standing that way since 1779, making it the oldest wh**ky maturation warehouse in the world.

Salt air moves through the stone year-round. The temperature barely shifts with the seasons. Even during the Second World War, when the rest of the distillery stopped making wh**ky for five years, the vault kept doing exactly what it's always done — ageing spirit, slowly, below the waterline.

That's the environment casks have matured in here for nearly 250 years: cool, damp, and unchanged. It's part of why wh**ky aged in this room develops the way it does — and why so little is ever lost to the Angel's Share.

In March 1941, during the Second World War, German bombers targeted Clydebank, a shipbuilding town on the Clyde. Auchentoshan distillery was caught in the blast. Warehouses destroyed, close to a million litres of wh**ky lost, production stopped for the rest of the war.

What survived was something else — a method of distilling used almost nowhere else in Scotland. Auchentoshan runs its spirit through three stills, not two, for every drop it makes. It's a Lowland tradition that's all but disappeared everywhere else, and Auchentoshan never stopped doing it.

The result is one of the lightest, smoothest whiskies to come out of the country — still made the way it always was.

A visit to where the casks are kept.

Our team travelled to Castlelaw Bonded Warehoue, Scotland, to meet with clients and visit the storage site where the casks we manage are held.

Seeing the casks we're responsible for in person, from the storage areas and racking to talking with the team who run the warehouse, gave us a fuller picture of how casks are cared for at every stage.

For us, investing in a wh**ky cask doesn't end on the day you buy it. It's about knowing where the asset you hold is kept, and how it's looked after.

In 1934, a young woman joined Laphroaig as a shorthand typist. Nobody could have guessed what came next.

By the outbreak of the war, Bessie Williamson was effectively running the distillery on her own.

When its owner died in 1954, she inherited it outright — becoming the first woman to have owned and run a Scotch wh**ky distillery in the twentieth century.

Decades later, a young Prince of Wales chose Laphroaig for his own Royal Warrant — a distinction the distillery has held ever since.

Her name doesn't just live in the history books.
Today it's back on a cask label, as Williamson.
