A highly contagious gut pathogen that causes diarrhoea and vomiting is morphing into a difficult-to-treat sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Shigella bacteria is responsible for around 450,000 cases of shigellosis every year in the United States, a condition which often leads to severe dysentry. Historically, this disease is spread by contaminated water and food, yet studies have shown an alarming development since the turn of the century.
