What has been, and still is, an intense but abundant year.

This week on the farm: short video = busy week! Our little broadforker making big moves, beds being prepped for winter plantings, a huge compost delivery, and a questionable tasting of edamame (they are delicious without the fairly hairy pod!). Not pictured: relief and joy at the well overdue rain! We're very grateful to have made it through the drought, and to have a week off from the watering cans!! 🌧️

Perhaps most excitingly though, the installation of our third polytunnel has begun! We might be a bit mad doing this at the busiest time of year, but so long as we have good weather window, we'll hopefully have it up in time to fill with delicious winter salad 🥬

Still 1 hour left of our pop-up shop- we are behind the Dracaena Centre next to our containers for the bank holiday Monday.

Lots of fresh produce still available including the little taste bombs- kiwiberries, loveland tomatoes, goonown kale and some huge UK grown Pak Choi.

“Looking beyond provenance through the lens of Cornish strawberries”

The title of an article that Finn, one of our growers, wrote earlier this summer for Sustainable Food Cornwall - all about Cornish strawberries, organic farming and what “local” really means.

People are often surprised to hear how most “Cornish” strawberries are grown:

- In Imported peat bags. Usually from Ireland or Norfolk. Not grown in Cornish soil.
- Fed with Artificial fertilisers. Which require lots of fossil fuels to be produced, and are part of global supply chains, including the Strait of Hormuz.
- Reliant on imported bumblebees and Predatory insects for pollination and pest control.
- Grown using plants that are bought-in from specialist propagators that are out of the county.

But these are the realities of our industrial food system . Which is efficient in one sense of the word - but also a highly extractive, carbon intensive system that is far removed from Cornwall and reliant on global industrial supply chains we know aren’t as resilient as we once thought.

Pictured is Rachel early this summer picking our soil-grown strawberries at our organic market garden on Loveland, Penryn. Believe it or not, nowadays less than 5% of strawberries are grown in the soil and less than 3% of UK farmland is organic.

The article is a call to action to us as consumers to look beyond pretty labels and Cornish flags to consider how our food is produced , and to support the growers and farmers who are doing that work.
