Schieferkopf Riesling Lieu-Dit Berg 2021 is a single-vineyard Alsace white w**e from Bernardvillé, made by Michel Chapoutier on ancient blue schist. It is one of three "Lieu-Dit" w**es from this vineyard.
In a recent panel tasting in The W**e Merchant, the three Schieferkopf Lieu-Dit Rieslings came 1st, 3rd and 5th. Berg took 3rd, which rather confirms what we thought when we tasted it.
Berg is the highest of the three Lieu-Dit parcels, so the fruit stays bright and the w**e keeps a proper mineral spine. Hand-picked, native yeast, 15 months in large foudres and, unusually for Alsace Riesling, full malolactic fermentation. That is what sets it apart: still citrus, green apple and stone, but with a softer, creamier texture than the steely style most people expect.

Lovely with grilled sea bass, scallops, tarte flambée, or a lightly spiced supper. It will also age, if you can resist opening it.
