This 14th October is International E-Waste Day, and this year it's all about "fast tech", think LED fairy lights, disposable vapes, mini fans, charging cables. Small, plastic, cheap to buy, and so easy to lose to the back of a drawer or bin without a second thought.

It adds up: 11.3 million of these items are binned incorrectly every week across the UK (Material Focus). They contain materials like copper and aluminium that could be recovered and reused, and many have lithium-ion batteries, which are a genuine fire risk in general waste. That's why this year the WEEE Forum is asking us to bring our items to the correct place to be reused or recycled rather than binning it.

Why not use today as an excuse for a proper hunt through the house and sort through your small electricals -

If they're still working -
Donate to charity (do check they take electricals) or list it on Facebook Marketplace or Vinted.

Broken?
Try a local repair café, we've seen hoovers and TVs brought back to life there.

Truly past it?
Vale of White Horse will collect small electricals on your general waste day and batteries on your recycling day, just bag them clearly next to your bin, or book a slot at the recycling centre.

A quick sort now and taking a few minutes to bring your e-waste to the right place means all those old cables and gadgets get a proper second life instead of gathering dust or going to landfill.

Festive Baking without the Waste : Tribe Zero-Waste Christmas Cake Kits now in stock!

We're very excited to be launching our Christmas Cake Kits this year.
So many of you tell us each that you hate the waste of having to buy a big packet of ingredients when you only need a few grams for your recipe. So we've devised this kit to remove the packaging and ingredient waste that comes with festive baking.

We're extra excited because this kit has been devised by our very own Jane Rennells - who before working as our refill shop assistant ran Stay Grounded Coffee Shop and was responsible for creating some of the best baked goods in town. So you can be sure this recipe will produce something delicious.

Featuring all the dry ingredients weighed out to exactly what the recipe needs, and packaged completely plastic-free. You just need to add your own eggs, butter (or a plant-based equivalent), orange and brandy, or tea for something zero-alcohol.

The cake can be made well ahead of Christmas Day. Give it a feed with brandy or tea each week and it'll keep for around 8 weeks, so one afternoon of baking sees you through the whole festive season.

If you've got a trusted family recipe you'd rather use, bring it in store and let us weigh out the ingredients to your exact specifications, we can even do this while you get on with the rest of your shopping in town.

October is pickling and preserving season — the last of the garden veg, market gluts, and windfall fruit all looking for a second life in a jar.

Our Le Parfait jars are built for exactly this. The Familia Wiss terrine jars have a straight-sided shape and an airtight two-part screw lid with sealing disc, so there's no wrestling with a metal clasp once you're done — just a simple twist to reseal. They're available in five sizes, from 350ml right up to 1.5L, so whether you're making up a single jar of chutney or a full batch of pickled cucumbers, there's a size that fits. Le Parfait have been making these jars in Puy-Guillaume, France, since the 1930s, and they're built to be refilled and reused for years, not just one preserving season.

Faringdon farmers market is back in the marketplace tomorrow.

The regular Tuesday market expands tomorrow with the addition of the monthly Farmer's Market. Pop down for some local produce, vegetables to cheese, oils to bread and cakes and even plants . There's always a treat to be had.

While you're in town why not top-up your shop with a selection of local goodies and refills from our Faringdon shop. We've got fresh organic eggs, local milk and a whole host of organic ingredient so you could get dinner sorted all from within the town centre.

Inspired by the latest season of Bake Off or perhaps, like one of our recent shop customers, you’re getting a head start on the festive baking? Luckily we’ve got a great selection of organic ingredients to help you become star baker and they're all available for home delivery too.

From organic flours and sugar to our range of dried fruits and spices. We pack them in compostable and recyclable paper bags or returnable tubs for delivery.

Our local delivery rounds are paused in October, back from 8 November. Until then, order online for Royal Mail delivery or free click & collect (orders over £30), or pop in to see us in Faringdon.

Join us for Sober Saturday !
Just a reminder that we're sampling a different alcohol-free drink in store at our Faringdon Refill Shop every Saturday this month and today it's your chance to try our refreshing Two Farmer's alcohol-free c***r.

A crisp, full-flavoured c***r made in Herefordshire and dealcoholised using cold-filtration technology so the apple character stays bright and true. We were loving this chilled in the summer but there's no reason it can't be used to create a mulled c***r as we move towards cooler weather.

Don't forget it's Faringdon repair cafe tomorrow!

Give your broken items a second life. Repairing things instead of replacing them is not only a great way to avoid waste it's a great way to save money too!

The repair cafe just asks from voluntary donations in return for you repair and the money goes to help do their fabulous work for our local community.

October's Refill Resolution is organic flour - just in time for some seasonal bakes.

We sell a range of organic flours on refill, all milled by Doves Farm, based in Berkshire. Doves Farm has been family-run since 1977, milling to the highest organic standards from their base in Hungerford, and they've been at the forefront of bringing heritage grains like rye, spelt, einkorn and emmer back into UK baking.

Some conventional UK wheat is sprayed with glyphosate just before harvest to dry the crop down. Buying organic avoids this and supports farming that works with nature, not against it.

Our refill flours include Strong White Bread Flour, Self Raising Flour and Plain Flour. Refilling means no bag to throw away and no half-used bag going stale in the cupboard — just weigh out what one bake needs, then come back when the jar runs low.

Looking for something more specialist? We also stock a small selection of pre-packed Doves Farm flours in paper bags, including spelt, rye, rice flour and buckwheat. As demand grows, we'll look to add these to our refill range too.

Bring a container (or use one of ours) and refill in store at 7a Marketplace, Faringdon. We're open every day: Monday–Saturday 9:30am–4pm and Sunday 10am–3pm.
