πŸͺͺ Digital proof of age for alcohol sales moves a step closer

The Government's proposals to allow licensed premises to accept certified digital proof of age have taken another step forward. If approved by Parliament, the changes are expected to come into force this autumn.

It's important to note that:
- Digital proof of age would be optional, not mandatory
- Existing physical forms of ID, such as passports and photocard driving licences, will continue to be accepted
- Businesses that choose to accept digital ID will need suitable verification technology, updated age verification policies and staff training

This is a development that schemes, licensing practitioners and the wider licensed trade will want to keep an eye on as further guidance becomes available.

Read Poppleston Allen's summary of the proposed changes here:

The proposed amendments reflect changing consumer habits and the increasing use of secure digital identity technology.
