Beekeeping Year - February
The queen may be laying again now and the brood area can be tennis ball sized.
π Get prepared for the upcoming season, clean, build and prepare equipment.
π Check hives for damage from woodpeckers or after storms
π Check entrances are clear of dead bees & mouseguards still in place.
π Heft Hive, feed fondant if needed. Beware of starvation in February & March
π Clear or consider shading entrance during snow.
π On a warmer day observe the entrance to see any activity, any early pollen going in is a good sign.
π Otherwise LEAVE ALONE.
π Consider what new equipment you need, donβt be caught out in May.
π Part building new frames without putting the in foundation can save time when in a hurry later.
π Read a few good bee books.
π Local beginners courses often starting soon

π Selective spring trapping of Asian yellow legged hornet queens may be a consideration when temperatures above 12C for 3+ days.
π Primarily trapping best undertaken in areas previous nests have been found in. Elsewhere selective monitoring traps may be useful later in the year.
