A great weekend at trade event helping out on The Farriers Foundation stand raising funds for our very own charity - a huge thank you to all of you who’ve purchased merchandise, nominated sponge soaks or just very kindly donated.

It was also a good opportunity to catch up with other farriers; ex-Army and civilian, apprentices and Hereford College staff. Certainly some alcohol drunk last night!!

Well worth the long drive from the Highlands - looking forward to next year’s event already!! 🐴🧲🔨🍻🥃

Very honoured to be invited back to Windsor for the week to cover the Royal Windsor Horse Show and the Platinum Jubilee Celebration beginning on Thursday - my 20th year as Show Farrier!!

In the meantime, I’m on the Showground, on site and on duty for the PJC rehearsals for the next three days - great to see so many different acts/displays from so many different countries working together to choreograph a pageant to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee!

It’s great to be part of a team - two other Show Farriers, Army Farriers with their Regiments and the HorsePower Team that plan, coordinate and run the whole event. And yes there’s the social side catching up with staff from previous years, ex-army mates and hopefully some old clients - well worth the 12 hour drive down from Inverness yesterday! Here’s to a good week!! 🐴🏇🏿🥂🍻

So yesterday was a great day providing Farrier cover at a local fundraising event - The Ross-shire EGS and Laminitis Show, held at Sheep Park near Balblair on the north coast of the Black Isle - watching and supporting clients compete in a variety of classes; showing in-hand, ridden, mounted games and clear round show-jumping. It was so nice to see so many happy faces at what was probably the first Show for 18 months for most. A very well done to everyone who took part, it was a great atmosphere at a well organised event - and thank you for making me and my wife Leanne feel very welcome. See you all there again next year!!

After a month of moving house plus my forge, tools and stock up to the Highlands of Scotland we finally got the keys to our new home on Friday afternoon and moved in then opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate!!

Following a weekend of unpacking boxes in the house, I’ve loaded up and re-stocked my truck ready for shoeing. I’m based on the Black Isle and ready to take on and book in new clients so please give me call on the number below to discuss your horse or pony’s hoof care needs.

With over 25 years of Farriery experience in the Windsor area; shoeing Army horses in the Household Cavalry, Carriage Horses in the Royal Mews and then a variety of disciplines including polo ponies, driving horses, park hacks, dressage and competition horses focusing on corrective foot balance, remedial shoeing backed up with a high standard of workmanship and reliability.

Coronavirus Update: Lockdown #2

With the the Government’s announcement that from today the Thursday 5th November a full lockdown for 4 weeks will be implemented in England, so I want to reassure my customers of the following:

1. I will be continuing to provide a full farrier service - this is in line with animal welfare and following guidelines set out by our governing and advisory bodies; The Farriers Registration Council (FRC) and the British Farriers & Blacksmiths Association (BFBA).
2. I will have the appropriate PPE, hand sanitiser, gloves, masks, Virkon anti bac sprays etc along with a change of clean clothes if required.
3. Only one person/owner may be present if needed to hold a fractious horse/pony.
4. I will be looking at bookings and grouping together appointments in order to reduce travel time and attending more yards than necessary per day please do bear with me if this means your time gets amended.
5. I will have my own lead rope in order to tie up with if necessary to minimise touch-point contact.
6. Please don’t be offended if I ask you to step back or wear a mask if we have to work in close proximity.😷😊
7. Lastly if you have any concerns surrounding your horses hoof care over the next month then please don’t hesitate to get in touch - it’s a tough time ahead, but we are all in it together.

Throwback to exactly a year ago this evening before the first day of Royal Windsor Horse Show 2019 when I checked into the Stable Manager’s office to leave my contact details as Show Farrier then took my girls for a run along the river bank in Home Park (Public) under the majestic backdrop of Windsor Castle. This would’ve been my 18th year as Farrier had it not been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic; What a difference a year makes....

To all my valued customers

During what is turning out to be an unprecedented and ever-changing time, I wanted to take some time to offer some advice around my measures in this difficult time and also support to all of my customers.

My peronal bio security measures follow the guidelines sent out from the Public Health England department.

1. I always carry handsoap and will regularly wash hands during my working day and always in between horses.
2. Owners who require to be present will be requested to remain the distance advised of 2m away.
3. I have a supply of tissues and any sneezes will be caught in a tissue and placed into my own bin, I always take my own rubbish home to dispose of.
4. If any customers have symptoms I respectfully ask you to let me know (in confidence if required) and alternative arrangements can be made
5. Payments are to be made electronically, online or by card machine, I have anti bacterial wipes for this equipment.

This is a rapidly changing set of circumstances however animal welfare is a necessity and as such unless direction is given to the contrary I will continue to provide my service to you and your beloved horses.

The economic impact of the measures introduced by the government will affect everyone, we are all in this together. Please feel free to message, email, text me for advice should you find your personal circumstances are changing. Together we can get through this, I do not wish any of my customers to suffer extra stress surrounding the welfare of their horse.

My best wishes to everyone, stay healthy and positive.

Chris

Very honoured to be contacted by Jonathon Nunn FWCF earlier this year to see if I would like to join The Farriers Foundation team as a Trustee to a very worthwhile charity for our trade and profession.

Last night, both Mark Trussler FWCF and I were introduced and welcomed to the Team for our first meeting at Grant Moon FWCF place up near Derby.

A lot of ideas and fund-raising suggestions were brought to the table for the year ahead - so watch this space and follow the Farriers Foundation page on Facebook.

The Farriers Foundation welcomes two new trustees to the committee Mark Trussler Fwcf and Chris J Carrel joined us this week. New beginnings for us all. We are looking for volunteer helpers also who can assist with attending fundraising events. Please contact us if you would like to be involved. Email [email protected]

Dear Clients,

As a precautionary measure, I have sprayed all my shoeing tools, tool box, leather chaps and work boots with Virkon - a DEFRA approved virucidal disinfectant to combat the spread of EHV-1.

I’ll do this numerous times throughout the working day - and before leaving a yard and arriving at the next.

I will also carry a full change of clothing including a clean jacket - but I will aim to only work at one yard each day then go home, shower and change into fresh clean clothes for the next day - this is an attempt to eliminate cross-contamination between yards.

As well as these measures, I will fully respect individual yard bio-security protocols and lockdown rules - please let me know if there’s any in place - I will also monitor yard social media posts.

Thank you for understanding - working together we should be able to stamp out the spread of this awful equine virus with honesty, responsibility and common sense.

This weekend I’m providing Duty Farrier cover at the Royal Windsor Fun Ride - we have approximately 600 riders over the two days riding an 8 mile course through Windsor Great Park with optional fences, jumps and a water obstacle.

I’ll be positioned near the secretary’s tent and veterinary point with my truck to respond to any shoeing related concerns: lost shoes, loose shoes and risen clenches!

And as you can see in the last photo, I’ve familiarised myself with assisting the Duty Vet operating the Horse Ambulance trailer, winch system and screens just in case of the unlikely event.... ✅

Good morning to all the competitors and crew at the Smiths Lawn Horse Trials 2018.

It’s already warming up to be a scorcher of a day, so please offer your horses and dogs plenty of fresh water - a tap with good pressure is situated right next to where I’m working.

I’m parked up in the lorry park against the tree-line, part way along the sand track - please come and see me for any lost shoes, loose shoes and diffy stud holes you may have.

Otherwise, good luck to all competitors over the next two days! 🏇

Despite the wintery driving conditions this morning, there’s a good sized group of us here at the Handmade Shoes Spring Clinic sitting through an interesting presentation from Australian farrier Dr Brian Hampson talking about the feral horse (brumby) existing in the Outback.

The next presentation is with another Australian farrier Robert Stevenson currently working in Dubai, showing us the use of modern materials in farriery - creating acrylic shoes using molds.

Handmade Shoes Ltd Autumn Clinic

Another interesting day with clinician farrier Rob Renirie from Belgium.

Rob did a presentation on his thoughts and styles of remedial shoeing on the Continent. Billy went through the basics of concave shoe making and alterations to ‘everyday’ machine made shoes. In the afternoon Rob did a live horse shoeing demo.

Plus great to catch up with other farriers, learn some different ideas and gain essential CPD points!

Remedial shoeing with lightweight concave stock side-clipped straight-bar shoes fitted to a Thoroughbred mare with particularly low heels. The heels hadn't yet collapsed or crushed but needed that extra support and regular shoeing at 4 or 5 week intervals until such time the heels have strengthened and grow at the correct angle from the widest part of the frog.
Side clips are used to allow the shoe to be fitted under the toe of the correctly dressed, but not over-dressed, foot thus encouraging earlier break-over to improve performance and reduce energy use.

An interesting day at Farrier Focus 2017 weekend trade fair which also coincides with the International Horseshoeing Competition.

Great to catch up with other farriers both last night at the bar and throughout today, browse the trade stands plus sit through a couple of presentations on farriery topics.

Also nice to see my photo from the Tour de Farrier 2017 enlarged onto a banner displayed up high!!
