Aquaponics Smallholding and Training Facility
Our new project is the Aquaponics Smallholding and Training Facility based in rural Cheshire as a community agriculture start-up project supported by UrbanAg CIC.
Our plan is to provide for the wider community:- -- access to fresh ethically produced local foods; -- agricultural smallholding related work experience; -- practical training courses of various types; -- possibly a few part time jobs; -- option for unused excess produce going to the local food bank. Also to:- -- give people the opportunity to become members of their community; -- encourage local participation in the development of the farm; -- explore and promote the benefits of healthy and sustainable lifestyles; -- combine Aquaponics with Permaculture design methods and promote the benefits for urban agriculture; -- sustainably manage natural ecosystems for the benefit of local wildlife and as a resource for education and recreation; -- promote biodiversity and approaches which people can take to help improve environments for wildlife; -- provide children and young people with a safe, stimulating and inclusive space in which to come and to connect with where their foods come from. Background: As of March 2018 the Aquaponics Smallholding project is a new start-up for Urbanag CIC, and we have a concept design and an agreement with the land owner to create this new facility on their smallholding where she currently raises various breads of poultry, pigs, and cattle. Yet having solved the number one big task of finding a site to build on, our next issue was getting helpers and materials, because due to it being a community type project we have little or no budget. Therefore on all of this work we are going to have to be very creative in the obtaining, reusing, and reclamation of materials (wood, bricks, panelling, paint, insulation, electrics, plumbing, etc) for the conversion. As you can imagine planning to a tight schedule is very difficult when we are not sure about the availability of materials, and we need to be able to generate income early on to pay for most of the build materials. So we have a fixed deadline for the teaching area to be ready and usable for our first course starting on Friday 11th May 2018 ... https://permaculture.org.uk/education/course/introduction-aquaponics-weekend For project updates see ... http://www.urbanag.uk/urbanag-blog
