Demystifying Vallis Veg and Vallis Farm! Our lovely neighbours did a great post…
Vallis Farm vs Vallis Veg... neighbours but not the same.
Some folks are still finding this confusing and as this week’s box featured celery from our lovely neighbours over at Vallis Veg we thought we’d take this opportunity to clarify. Vallis Farm has been a farm (called Vallis Farm) for at least 150 years, probably longer, although we don’t have records going any further back than this.
Vallis Veg is a 20 acre plot of land, bought and cultivated by Chris and Cordelia around 20 years ago. At the time Vallis Farm was not a working farm and so the name Vallis Veg was a perfect choice. The area of Vallis (we think an old Norman word for valley?) is an established part of Frome with many streets, footpaths and even a school using the name of Vallis. Not confusing for most of us Fromies!
When the farm was taken over in 2022 we deliberated over what to do, whether to change the name to avoid confusion. We discussed with our neighbours and in the end decided to stick with the name history had given us. After all, we’re not the only places with Vallis as a prefix.
Our values and practices are extremely similar to Vallis Veg, we both farm with nature at the forefront of what we do and between us we’ve created a fantastic wildlife corridor. We both have veg box schemes that provide some of the local community with delicious veg. We’re absolute small fry when it comes to the big supermarkets so we are in no way competitors! We help each other out where we can, (hence the celery, they have lots, we didn’t grow any this year) but we are separate businesses. After all, us small fry, need to stick together! Especially given the challenges we’re all facing today, climate change and biodiversity loss are real. The only way to rise to the challenge is to work together.
