Ravensworth Grange Farm

Ravensworth Grange Farm All born and bred here on our farm. Whatever way you enjoy it we hope you taste the care and attention to detail that goes into it from start to finish.

Ravensworth Grange is a family run 200 acre farm producing pork from our rare breed Middle White pigs, renowned for their crackling, homebred lamb and occassionally Aberdeen Angus beef. We sell our meat at Newcastle and Hexham farmers markets ( get there early to see our full range of cuts) or it is possible to arrange collection from the farm. You could also try it cooked professionally by some o

f the best local chefs at The Feathers- Hedley on the Hill, Cafe21 group or Tyneside Cinema Bar Cafe, both in Newcastle.

Yesterday morning we blood tested the cattle to check their trace element levels and gave them a vitamin injection. We've never had issues before but two summers of drought is possibly taking it's toll. We'll see when the results come back.
This little fella had to come in with the big kids , bit of an adventure at a week old but here is settled back in the field with mum πŸ₯°

We'll be at Hexham Farmers' Market tomorrow in the market place from 9am with our Middle White pork and new season lamb. It'll be great to see you there 😊. I've finally got round to taking a photo of our half lamb pack. This customer chose, shoulder on the bone and the loin as half rack and half chops. Quite chuffed with that picture

Eight and a half weeks after the start of calving the last calf has finally arrived, three weeks behind everyone else. It's arrived to a dry and barren farm but hopefully the rain will arrive soon 🀞🀞🀞 every shower seems to go round us at the moment.
Unusually we've had a few issues this year, the post mortem we had done is suggesting a Vitamin A deficiency connected to last year's drought. It's a whole new world that we are having to adjust to πŸ™„πŸ™„

Every farmer has got the welding mask out this evening 🀣🀣 no expense spared. Was great until the clouds arrived at peak eclipse. When it wasn't my turn to get the mask the clouds were also beautiful and there was a weird floating rainbow 🌈

It's a bit blurry but it's not often we actually spy a dung beetle in action although we see evidence of their work all the time.
UK ones don't roll balls of muck around, they tunnel in and drag the muck down into the soil to feed their larva. This incorporates the nutrients and aerates the soil.
The bats, swallows and a whole host of other birds feed on them and their larva. It's a fabulous sign of a healthy ecosystem in action......who says farms are barren land!! πŸ€”πŸ€©πŸ€©πŸͺ²πŸ¦—πŸœπŸ¦ŸπŸ•·οΈπŸͺ°πŸπŸ›πŸž

Whoops!! Got our dates wrong so Miss Piggy farrowed in the woods yesterday. She'd made a fabulous nest and looks blissful here but when we went to bring her home, about 5hrs later, one piglet had wandered away and was getting savaged by crows.
We were just in time to rescue it, it has many peck marks on the back of its neck which we treated. It's a bit subdued but warm and full. We'll see 🀞🀞

She fired up and we're combining! Not quite the same as you've watched at Diddly Squat Farm Shop it doesn't beep at you and tell you where you're going wrong (needs quite a bit of skill and technical nouse to get the most from it), it does however fit through the gateways and round our smaller fields perfectly.........Long live the Class Matador Standard πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰. 🀦my well have jinxed the rest of the harvest!
Best crop of barley and straw we've had for a while 🀩🀩
