The last few days we've mostly been planting squash and courgette on the farm. We've planted over 5000 plants on our site at .farm where we grow organic veg for our shops and veg box home deliveries.

Meanwhile our early courgettes in the polytunnel are coming along nicely where it's been much hotter.

We should have our first little harvest from the tunnel next week and hopefully have lots of courgettes through summer and plenty of squash for the autumn!

This week we've been mostly planting squash and courgette out on the farm. We've planted over 5000 plants on our site at .farm where we grow organic veg for our shops and veg box home deliveries. We hope this will mean loads of courgettes later in the summer and plenty of squash for the autumn.

After delays caused by weather and a broken tractor we have finally got all our organic potatoes planted for 2026! This year we are growing a whole load of varieties including Arran Victory, Golden Wonder, Heidi Red, Alouette, Maris Baird, Jacky, Axona and Cara.

We're growing these over 2 acres with seed from the nice folks at Skea ( ). We plant them using old machinery that still does the job and we hope to equal last year's harvest of around 22 tonnes which supplied us with home grown potatoes in our shops and veg boxes from July till December.

We've been busy planting our acre of organic broad beans for our veg boxes and shops.

We've planted a few different varieties on different dates to give us a continuous supply through the summer and into the autumn. We have a really low tech setup for planting out beans but it is tried and tested and is fun to do for a few hours.

Our seedlings at Barnhill are basking in the sun and getting ready to go out into the field (or into the tunnels)!
We start most of our seedlings in our nursery tunnel and then plant them out with the help of our tractor and the funky attachment pictured. Once transplanted they'll grow into the veg you'll find later this year in our shops and veg boxes.

Also planted: the beginnings of our hedgerows that will help make our field more biodiverse and shelter our crops from the wind... and the foundation of our last polytunnel waiting to be built.

The shop role will average 4 days per week and the driving role is just occasional, providing cover to the core team.

Did you know that all of our veg boxes are different!?

We pack every single one to order and you can now have more control than ever before over what is and isn't in your box. Our new website makes managing your orders really easy so take a look if you haven't already.

-If you hate celery you can swap it out forever.

-If you have too many carrots already you can swap them out for a week.

-If you love tomatoes you can add them as a subscription.

-If you need chilli and tumeric for a recipe you can add them as a one off.

-If you want more fruit you can choose different weekly options or add more as a one off.

-If you want groceries from local heroes like .farm, , or you can add them.

-If you want to try a box just once, you can.

Now is a great time to support our farm and choose to eat a more local and organic diet which is better for the environment.

Here's a few snaps from life on the farm over the last week.

1/2 This week's veg boxes are brimming. Some boxes include red baby chard, lettuce and salad mix harvested from our polytunnel.

3 Polytunnel construction continues with what will be our main propagation tunnel almost ready. We really hope to cover it on Thursday when The wind is due to calm down.

4 We bought our first plough as well as a disc harrow! This will help us get our fields ready just as soon as the soil is dry enough.. it's been a really wet spring so far.

5 We've been tree planting with around 90 fruit trees planted and loads more native shrubs and hedges going in to break our huge fields into smaller, more sheltered plots of around an acre. Fruit trees are a long term investment with no fruit for at least 3 years. We planted them with support from . And varieties include Discovery, Scotch Bridget, Katy, Fortune, Bloody Ploughman and Purple Pershore Plum.

We have a few more roles open to applications right now.

We're looking for a cook who loves local, organic and seasonal cooking to join our kitchen team at Govanhill.

We've also extended the deadline for applications for our veg shed supervisor role - looking after packing of our veg boxes and wholesale offer at Barnhill Farm.

We're looking for a Veg Shed Supervisor to join our team at Barnhill Farm where we grow, pack and distribute local and organic produce.

In the role you will oversee the day to day operations of the veg shed which is the point of preparation and dispatch for our organic veg boxes and wholesale orders. You’ll oversee delivery of veg orders to our shops, wholesale customers and around 800 veg boxes per week.

You’ll supervise a small team within the veg shed and work closely with the Directors, the Vegbox Admin Manager, our growers and delivery drivers.

The role will be around 30h per week over 4 days, Tuesday-Friday. An additional day could be possible for an applicant seeking full time hours.
