This weeks veg boxes are filed with loads of beautiful local and organic veggies from our land and other local producers. Each and every box is packed to order and filled with the the things that you choose. This box is on it's way out to one of our many long term supporters in Glasgow and includes our home grown oriental salad mix, lima beans, courgette, Shetland & Tuscan rainbow kales, oregano, lemon basil as well as perpetual spinach, carrots, potatoes, onions and beetroot broccoli from other organic producers.

Our veg boxes are the best way to support sustainable local food growing and enjoy a delicious selection of fresh and unusual seasonal vegetables. Our new(ish) veg box website lets you have more control than ever over your veg box and the chance to choose all sorts of other foods and goods for delivery, weekly, fortnightly or as a one off.

GREEN TOMATOES

Our tomato season is going out with a bang! With the current wetter weather, we've unfortunately spotted some blight and decided to take out all tomato plants. We've got plenty of ripe tomatoes that you will soon find in our shops and in your veg boxes, and mountains of green tomatoes.

Now's the time to stock up to make green tomato chutney, fried green tomatoes, pickled green tomatoes, green tomato salsa... If you're lucky they might even go red (or yellow)

UNUSUAL LOCAL VEG ALERT!

This week's surprise crop is minutina, also known as erba stella (star grass) or buck's horn plantain. It's a pretty heirloom vegetable from Italy that you can use either as a salad green, on its own or mixed with other leaves, or as a cooking green like spinach.

Being a plantain it's a hardy vegetable that can also withstand a bit of frost. We had in our large and extra large veg boxes this week, and it's available in our shops now too. It's our first time growing it, let us know how you like it!

UNUSUAL LOCAL VEG ALERT!

Coming off the farm this week and next is celtuce, a kind of lettuce which is bred for its edible stem. Celtuce is also know as stem lettuce, asparagus lettuce or celery lettuce and is popular in Chinese cooking where it is called a-choi, woju or wosun.

The leaves can be pulled off the stem and eaten just like lettuce, leaving you with a thick stem which is really the main event of this vegetable. The stem can be chopped up and used in stir frys and is sometimes pickled and served as a side. We'd really encourage you to explore and try out recipes for this and let us know how you get on - this is the first time we've grown it and we've not had much time to experiment with the cooking end yet!

Celtuce is in our shops now (and for the next few weeks) and it is also featuring in some the the veg boxes.

When it's so driech outside it's nice for us to go in the polytunnel on the farm and see that summer is still holding on for dear life... this week has actually seen our biggest tomato harvest so far this year with over 100kg picked in the last few days.

We're growing loads of interesting varieties of bigger salad tomatoes this year including heritage Scottish Ailsa Craig, Scottish Yellow. We are also growing our long term trusted favourites tigerella and mamande.

Then we have some new tomato trials on the go with Lotus and Paul Robeson. Lotus is a cream coloured tomato which was bred long ago in Belarus while Paul Robeson has quite a story to tell..

Paul was an American born bass-baritone concert artist, actor, professional football player, and activist who became famous around the world in the first half of the twentieth century for both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political stances. Paul lent his support for the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War, the Soviet Union and Joseph Stalin, and to the Council on African Affairs while opposing the Korean War and founding the American Crusade Against Lynching. It's not much of a surprise that much of this didn't go down well in his homeland and by the 1950's the US Department of State Demanded he hand in his passport, he declined.

Meanwhile, deep in Siberia, someone bred a delicious black tomato and named it Paul Robeson in his honour, then in 1952 he won the Stalin Peace Prize. Make of his life what you will it is a very delicious tomato and Mr Robeson was a talented singer... you can watch him sing to Scottish miners on a well known platform - look for 'Paul Robeson sings to Scottish miners (1949)'

All these delicious tomatoes are available in both our shops for the next month or so as well as to add onto your veg box delivery. Make the most of the tomato season while you can.

Here's a preview of just some of the organic veg coming out of the farm today and into veg boxes and our shops this week.

It's been our biggest harvest of the year with hundreds of bunches of chard and kale picked alongside 100s of cucumbers loads of herbs, broad beans, kohl rabi and some beautiful edible flowers.

We also picked some super interesting vegetable including heritage Scottish Veg like Shetland Kale, Ailsa Craig Yellow tomatoes and our first crop of Yard Long Beans.

Pop into our shops to pick up produce or get yourself an organic veg box to enjoy the best local produce this summer.

Our home grown tomato season is about to start.

This year we're growing around 15 varieties from the huge Marmande to the tiny Santium Sunrise.

Tomatoes are loads of work to grow. Firstly we have to sow, pot on, plant out and tie onto string in the polutunnels. Then weekly we visit every plant and train it up the string and cut out side shoots to encourage a taller more fruit filled plant.

Tomato leaves are covered in tomato 'tar' which rubs off onto skin first making it yellow, then green like copper before making it completely black.

We'll have our first home grown tomatoes in our Govanhill and Partick shops within the next week or two as well as available in the veg box online shop.

We've been making the most of the warm dry weather to get out into the field and take on the w**ds. Our steerage hoe gets pulled behind the tractor and steered side to side to w**d between our veg without hitting it... We manage it 99% of the time.

Today we got all our second planting of brassicas w**ded (lots more kale) as well as our leeks and spring onions.

The steerage hoe is one of the tools we have to control w**ds alongside a cultivator and tine w**ded. It's a much better way to do things than spraying poison over the top of vegetables and one of many reasons we are 100% dedicated to sustainable organic production.

The last few days we've mostly been planting squash and courgette on the farm. We've planted over 5000 plants on our site at .farm where we grow organic veg for our shops and veg box home deliveries.

Meanwhile our early courgettes in the polytunnel are coming along nicely where it's been much hotter.

We should have our first little harvest from the tunnel next week and hopefully have lots of courgettes through summer and plenty of squash for the autumn!
