My lilac didn’t get the memo that it’s October.

The TOP of one of my lilac bushes has small blooms at the very top!

Ummm… isn’t this supposed to happen in May?!

Apparently lilacs can occasionally bloom again in the fall, especially after stressful growing conditions - which we have DEFINITELY have had. So after the heat, humidity and CRAZY amount of rain we’ve had this year, I guess my lilac decided October needed a little color. 💜

I’m enjoying it while it lasts, even though it may mean fewer blooms next spring.

Anyone else experiencing any weird “what season is it?” behavior in their gardens this year?

I was looking at my farm page cover photo - that I haven't changed out yet for fall. The one filled with my beautiful echinacea and my little garden flag that welcomes visitors with a playful black cat surrounded by sunflowers. You know, showing off my front landscaping in all its spring glory.

And then I looked out the front window — currently.

The last couple of weeks, all I’ve really noticed is DEAD.

The flower petals are all gone, the leaves are fading, and my echinacea are standing there with their dark little seed heads at the end of long, bare stems. They almost look like something out of a Halloween movie — like something haunting.

It’s still deceptively sunny and warm out. So the landscape looks dead while the weather is pretending it’s not quite ready to let go.

And honestly? I am.

I’m ready for a change of season. I’m more than ready to be done with the heat, humidity and especially the seemingly endless rain we’ve had lately. I’m looking forward to crisp fall days, and yes… even winter (snow ❤ gasp!).

But there’s something very strange about watching the beautiful landscape that had me so excited in the spring slowly fade away.

I guess that’s gardening. Everything has its season.

Even the creepy black echinacea heads.

My dehydrator has been running on and off for over 3 weeks, and apparently I grew A LOT more herbs than I realized.

Thai basil, green basil, purple basil, thyme, garlic chives, mint, lemon balm, sage and rosemary — all getting dried and tucked away for winter.

I haven’t bought a new herb plant or packet of herb seeds in several years. I just let them reseed themselves and see where they pop up. Others are perennials and come back every year. Apparently, my plan is working.

Now I have a whole cupboard full of mason jars!

Do you dry and save your own herbs?

Anyone else lose trees in last night’s winds?
And does anyone know if this cherry tree can be saved???

Our 6-7 year-old cherry blossom tree snapped 2 feet up its main trunk. See pictures.

The frustrating thing is...
We’ve either lost or have had to take down 20+ trees on our little property over the past 9 years because of storms or (mostly) due to emerald ash borers.

We keep planting MORE, but we lose more trees than we keep. Some we plant ourselves, some we’ve paid to have professionally planted - it actually doesn't matter because we lose both.

It’s SO frustrating!

Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar 🧡

I’ve been finding monarch caterpillars all over our milkweed for the past few weeks, including this little guy in my garden.

Every time I spot one, it makes my heart full.🦋🌿

I never get tired of seeing them.

Bess update ❤️

I’m sorry it has taken me a few days to share this, but I just wasn’t ready.

My sweet Bess passed away Tuesday morning.

Even though I got her to the vet as soon as I realized something was wrong and started medication immediately, the damage was already too severe. There was nothing more I could do.

Bess was 12 years old and had been with me for several years, along with three of her kids. She was one of my favorites—kind, gentle, incredibly tame, and just such a sweet girl.

Thank you to everyone who commented and hoped for good news.

My sweet Bess is at the vet today. ❤️

I got Bess several years ago along with three of her kids. She’s now 12 years old.

In addition to Elizabeth, Bess is my favorite goat. She is just so kind, gentle and tame.

A couple days ago I noticed one of my goats having some very loose stool. I’ve watched them all closely and noticed that Bess was a little lethargic and, over the past 24 hours, has lost weight. I checked her eyelids and they were really pale—much paler than they should be—so I quickly made a vet appointment.

The vet came right out to my car and did the exam outside in the shade, where Bess could just hang out in the grass and be comfortable. I’m waiting to hear what her parasite load is.

Her eyelids are definitely the worst, but I noticed some of my other goats are pale too, so I’ll be treating everyone today and keeping a close eye on them.

I know we are still IN garden season and freezing, canning, storing end of summer crops. As you think about wrapping up for the season, think about using barn waste to overwinter your garden.

I have barn waste available FREE! It’s a mix of straw and manure from my herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats. 🐐

Near Perry, Iowa.

It makes great winter garden cover, and as it breaks down, it adds organic matter and nutrients back into the soil. Just work it into the garden in the spring and you’re ready to go! 🌿
