Home of the Twyning Ash British Blue Herd

Twyning Ash is nestled under the Cotswold escarpment in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Set in 550 acres of grass and arable land it is a family run mixed farm consisting of beef, sheep and arable. Currently comprising of 550 head of cattle (approximately 230 beef cows and followers, which are Limousin cross British Blue or British Blue cross Limou

sin). With just over 100 of the cattle being pedigree British Blue, 50 mule ewes put to a Suffolk ram, 100 acres of wheat and barley and 40 acres of maize. All cereals produced on the farm are mill and mixed and fed back to homebred livestock. In 1987 following a trip to the Paris agricultural show and seeing the Belgian Blue breed for the first time coincided with us wanting to move away from our small dairy enterprise. We looked at expanding our small Hereford cross suckler herd which consisted of home bred Hereford cross Friesian cows put to a Hereford bull. In 1988 we made our first purchase of five recipients near calving with pedigree embryos from Donald Tyson of the Donnah herd, first pedigree calf arrived June 88’establishing the Twyning Ash herd of Belgian Blues. From day one we have always seen the importance of recorded figures and this philosophy hasn't changed to this day making us the longest recording Blue Herd in the country. It has always been our goal to produce bulls with easier calving ability and high growth rates, good mobility with length and height. In the 23 years we have been selling semen we have earned a reputation within the A I industry with dairy farmers producing the cross bred calf that the commercial beef producer demands.

Two new arrivals in the night.
A big strong black pedigree blue heifer calf by Twyning Ash Sonic born easily on her own, from a cow with a huge pelvis.
The other a smaller all white pedigree blue bull calf ( twyning ash jingle x twyning ash dolly) out of a Hereford cross recipient. He is a week early, but annoyingly the calf presented backwards with only his tail presented, so had to be caesarean sectioned. If it had been the correct way around she would have calved it easily enough, so a shame for her but both are healthy and well which is the man thing.

Lovely surprise earlier finding this pedigree British Blue bull calf born all on his own. The second one this week. Here at Twyning Ash we have been consistently breeding for calving ease in our pedigree blue herd since we started 38 years ago, and coupling that with high growth rates. This has helped with the success of our genetics being used in dairy herds to improve the beef on dairy offspring. 🐄 🚜

Twyning Ash Oskar calf went for £855 at 34days old out of a Holstein cow at sedgemoor market last week. What an incredible trade. This bull is doing 272 days gestation, fantastic conception rates, a super all round bull, bred for beef on dairy. An Incredible Ukulele son delivering for dairy farmers. Message me for a price or more info 🚜 🐄

The difficult decision to disperse our commercial suckler herd is being held at sedgemoor market on Saturday the 26th July.
A great opportunity to add to your own herd with strong powerful cows and calves ranging from bbx, Limx, Hereford x genetics. The use of high EBV bulls to aid improvements in genetic potential have always been important to us and coupling easy calving lines with high growth rates.

Our suckler herd has been a closed herd since 1994 after the purchase of 30 limx bulling heifers, so they are all beef genetics and not bred from dairy.

See the comments for videos of the groups.

Many thanks Charles Carter
