What a difference a week makes ! This time last weekend we were walking in a winter wonderland ❄️

Now it’s just raining and cold!!!

Have no fear, our vines are tough cookies. During the winter months they are dormant and the cold shouldn’t affect their health this spring. That’s why it is key to get the timing of pruning right - trim too soon and your vines might start beginning to bud early, resulting in a frost damaged crop. This can be a big problem in the UK especially !

Short back & sides please sir ✂️

While some of us may not be getting to the hairdressers any time soon, our vines have certainly had a good trim!

It’s really important to prune back last years growth to make way for the coming spring.

The method we stuck to this year was to chop back all of 2020’s growth and keep 2 canes (branches) with 8-12 buds on. This should give us about 16 bunches of grapes in 2021 per vine. Then another 1 spur (newer smaller sub-branch) with approx 2 buds that will become a cane in 2022 👍 🍇

The lovely thing about working on a farm is you always have to build towards longer term goals. During this dark and grey lockdown it can be easy to forget that spring is coming and it will come again next year too! Hang on in there gang! ☺️💛

Just around the corner from us is the beautiful grade II listed Emley Farmhouse. This gorgeous property was built in the 17th century and has been exceptionally well looked after over the years.
Always a pleasure see such a well preserved example of old English architecture 🖤

Sunset behind Thursley 💕

The boys were very impressed with the views during their evening stroll. We don’t get sunset on our side of the valley sadly. But if the mood strikes us, it’s only a quick trot up the hill to see this wonder every evening! 💛

🦅 Neighbourhood Watch

We were a bit late to get our bird scarer up this year and it looks like the pigeons and other local birds have been having a bit of a party in the vines already! We’ve applied some netting to the bottoms of our rows too to stop the braver wildlife from getting their hands ( or claws!! ) on our produce before we do! 🦡🐿🕊

There will be plenty of fruit leftover which we leave for the birds and badgers to enjoy after harvest, as we do think it is import and to acknowledge our setting and ensure the local wildlife get a share of crop - just maybe a slightly less juicy share... 🤣

Spring in September 🌸🌿🌷🍏🤍🌺

Who knows what type of flowers these are springing up in the orchard in early September ?!

We are loving all this late summer lushness, hang on in there pretty green, we are not quite ready for autumn yet!!! 💚

And yes we do have a totem pole in the garden - doesn’t everyone?!
