Danni’s Forest School Adventures

After a short break from outdoor education during August (and time to catch up on some of my other work) we are back to it with gusto and loving the autumnal turn to the weather!

Over the last two weeks we have been...doing a reccy at Staveley Woodlands and planning the upcoming Young Rangers days, enjoying the last of the Pond dipping sessions down on the mosses, searching for and making lovely needle felted versions of the beautiful Mushrooms that are making their appearances, building tiny little jumping frogs with our preschool group Nature Tots, and yesterday we showcased all that fantastic work the young people have been doing at the Westmorland Show along with our little Peat Bog Box (grown by the Fantabulous Bog Squad)

Growing in our little Peatland Planters area at the moment is (hopefully) around 500 Ragged Robin seeds. Ragged Robin used to be widely seen on and around Peat Bogs in the area, but is becoming a hard find. Fingers crossed we will be planting out onto the Witherslack Mosses soon!

A highlight for the group today was finding some lovely wild clay that we can process and use ⚱️🏺might not be the biggest highlight for parents, sorry for the muddy, clay covered clothes!!!

Lovely afternoon with Bog Squad today, we prepped the planting area ready for the next batch of plants, we finished our splatometer survey work, we read a book resulting in a lovely discussion about it's hidden meanings and of course took some time to sit and watch this fantastic slug 💕

The speckled shade in the woods today was fantastic. We spent the day building hanging baskets, finding sunshine loving bugs, learning to weave and we found a lovely owl pellet to investigate too

Young Rangers session today was spent creating Beetle Habitat piles from trees that have fallen across the path on a Nature Reserve 🍁🌳🐞🪲

Today is EARTH DAY 🌍

At forest school today in all classes we have been taking a closer look at nature's patterns, both what we could see, and what we could hear. We took a few minutes to lay back and appreciate the world around us, and think about what we might do to make our little corner of the world a bit better too.

Todays World Curlew Day was celebrated at Bog Squad, we chatted about these fantastic birds and why they are Red Listed, then made our own fact file poster for the Outdoor Classroom area.
