Carpenters Tradtional Herefords Pedigree Traditional Hereford Cattle and Kerry Hill sheep.graze rare wildflower meadows on a low input system.

Beef and lamb sometimes available, Livestock for sale. Carpenters Farm is owned and managed by Ian and Helen Macleod, who run pedigree Kerry Hill sheep and pedigree Traditional Hereford cattle on their wild flower meadows in the shadow of the famous Malvern Hills. These meadows form part of the remaining 6% in the UK which are managed under the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, and successfully rear grass-fed lambs and calves every year.

This calf is 5 days old. Not the best pics as he had a serious attack of the zoomies!
His mother is 12 years old.He is her 9th calf. She has never eaten anything but grass in the summer and forage in the winter from our old grassland pasture........no cereals, ever! These traditional cattle still do exactly what they were bred to do a couple of hundred years ago. All she has failed to do is give us a heifer calf.......maybe next year!! 😂

We've had all Monroe's health screen results back now. He is clear of BVD, IBR, Johnes and Lepto. He was TB tested as part of our annual herd test and is all clear, as were all the others. Sadly with his daughters coming into the herd now, he's ready to find a new herd to call home. 100% success at getting cows in calf for us, all the time we've had him.

So....up until yesterday we still had no rain ....no meaningful rain since the end of February......but yesterday we did...

So....up until yesterday we still had no rain ....no meaningful rain since the end of February......but yesterday we did get about 5mm so maybe we might see a little green soon!
The cattle look fine, calves still growing, cows fit and well, still no forage back up needed! Traditional/OP Herefords proving their ability to thrive in very challenging conditions and allowing us to save our forage for the winter!

Gotta love a Traditional Hereford!
Bit of excitement for this bunch as they're allowed to go from one field with no grass to another with very slightly more!
We've had no meaningful rain since March, and these girls, some 14 years old, in calf with calves at foot have not only survived but kept themselves well with no help from forage or cake supplementation. They will start to get some hay if it doesn't rain soon, but with only half our usual crop we're trying to conserve what we have for what will probably be another wet winter!
They look pretty well all things considered......what a brilliant breed of cattle!
