Every batch of our malt is checked, tested and quality approved by our in-house technical team. 🔬

Our central lab in Great Ryburgh, Norfolk analyses incoming barley and every batch of malt we make, helping to ensure consistency for brewers and distillers.

There’s a reason Crisp Malt’s home and maltings have been in Great Ryburgh in the north of Norfolk since 1870. 🌾

This area has been recognised for its exceptional barley growing for well over a century and a half, with light sandy and chalky soils, a drier climate than the rest of the UK, plus cooling sea breezes from the coast all playing their part in producing barley that’s well suited to malting.

Those coastal winds play an important role, bringing moisture inland to support the slow, steady growth needed for quality barley grain.

It’s a reminder that our malt quality starts with place: the soil, the weather, our relationships with our barley farmers and the landscape around us.

Do you remember our Sustainability Open Day at Elveden Estate where we showcased the awesome trials Syngenta have been working on? 🚜🌾

Well, Farmers Weekly talk all about it in their latest article here: A five-year trial coordinated by Syngenta at Elveden Estate is showing encouraging results from a regenerative system using a clover living mulch. In 2025, spring malting barley delivered an 18% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per tonne, alongside higher yields, lower fertiliser use and improvements in soil health and biodiversity.

For us at Crisp Malt, the most important takeaway is that sustainable sourcing isn’t about a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s about working closely with growers, understanding what is practical on farm, and using data to drive continuous improvement across soil health, water, biodiversity and climate.
We’re proud to be part of this collaborative work as we build a more resilient future for malting barley.

We’re proud to share that Crisp’s Return-a-Bag scheme has been recognised with a global Innovation Award from RMI Analytics ♻️

Our UK scheme was created to help solve a long-standing challenge for brewers and distillers: what to do with used malt sacks once they’ve served their purpose.

Through Return-a-Bag, empty malt sacks can be collected, processed and repurposed, helping to divert waste from landfill and support a more circular approach across the brewing and distilling supply chain.

So far over 12,300kg of waste malt sacks have been recycled through the scheme, which works out to be more than 130,000 25kg malt bags.

🙌 A huge thank you to all the breweries and distilleries already taking part. 🙌

🌾 So, what exactly are brewing adjuncts and what can they do for your beer?

In this video, we take a closer look at our range of micronized and torrefied cereals, and how different grains can influence everything from mouthfeel and head retention to colour, flavour and fermentability.

Mike Benson, our Technical Sales Manager, joins Andrew Shentall from MFP to explain how these products are made, including a behind-the-scenes look at our sister site in Northallerton.

We explore everything from Torrefied Wheat and Flaked Torrefied Maize to Rice, Barley and Oats, with some useful insights into what each can bring to the brewhouse.
