A small step in the right direction for introducing English Partridge back to Sansaw Estate …. 🐣

The Grey Partridge, often referred to as the English partridge, has long been an iconic bird of the British countryside. Once a familiar sight across farmland and rolling countryside, its distinctive rusty face, grey plumage and quick whirring flight made it a treasured part of rural life.

Traditionally associated with mixed farming landscapes, the species thrives in areas with healthy hedgerows, rough grass margins and insect-rich habitats which provide essential cover and food for both adults and chicks.

Over recent decades, grey partridge numbers have declined significantly due to changing agricultural practices, habitat loss and increased predation pressure. The reduction of traditional hedgerows, intensive cropping systems and widespread pesticide use have all contributed to fewer insects being available for young chicks during the crucial early weeks of life.

As a result, the grey partridge has become something of a symbol for wider biodiversity challenges facing the British countryside.

With the help of an incubator, 7.5km of new hedgerows and an expanding acreage of wild bird mixes, Sansaw Estate has made a small step to start doing their part in seeing these native birds back in the Shropshire countryside. Starting with a small bump to increase population, this will hopefully one day encourage a spread of wild covey’s across the Estate and local areas.

We truly are seeing spring 'in action' around the estate despite it being late April. Longer days, warmer light, and the first real signs of the countryside waking up - helped by this warm spell. After a winter that seemed reluctant to let go of its grip, the Sansaw Estate is shifting into its new rhythm full of growth, activity, and optimism.
