Hook & Son

Hook & Son Dairy farm based in East Sussex. Producers and direct sellers of organic dairy products - available on local delivery, via courier and at farmers' markets.

Welcome to the Hook & Son page! Father and son Phil and Steve Hook farm Longleys Farm organically. They have been in partnership together since 1991. It's in their blood, the Hook family have been farming in East Sussex for at least 250 years! They farm 180 acres just north of Hailsham, and on the very western edge of the Pevensey Levels Site of Special Scientific Interest (S.S.S.I.) The

organic methods of farming that they use work in harmony with maintaining and enhancing this important and wonderful local ecology. Their farm is teeming with a wide variety of flora and fauna. A recent RSPB species survey found 45 different species of native birds, including eight species whose status is category red (declined by more than 50% over the last 25 years), and nine species that have declined by 25-49% over the same period (category amber). The farm is an all grass farm, most of which is permanent pasture on the Pevensey Levels. On the upper western side of the farm, grass leys that are rich in red and white clover are grown. The cows graze all these fields once the ground is dry enough 'to turn them out' in the spring, until the ground becomes too wet in the autumn. The cows are then housed indoors for the winter. They are fed grass silage in the winter that has been made from lush spring grass and clover. An organic pea bean and wheat mix is also fed to the cows to supplement their grass diet. Hook & Son have been selling raw, organic products directly to the public for over 5 years now, both on a local milk round and by national postal order. We're really sorry to say we have had to cancel this year's Turn Out Day event, for a number of reasons: due to last year's drought, we weren't able to make as much silage for the winter. We've been eking it out as much as possible by only feeding it to the milking herd. The rest of the heifers and calves have been on hay, which lately we've had to buy in, as we've run out of our own hay too!

We had been hoping the new Zero Grazer would arrive this week. This would have been great, as we would have been able to cut fresh grass and feed it to the cows until the planned Turn Out Day. However, there is a delay with it being delivered by Grass Technology in Ireland, which means we've only got some average quality hay for the milkers. This would not be good enough nutrition for them for the next ten days. The sun is shining, the ground has dried up, there is plenty of grass and the forecast looks good for at least the next week. We have therefore decided to cancel Turn Out Day, and let the cows out today instead.

We’ll be refunding those who have bought tickets online. Again, we’re really sorry to disappoint but of course the cows having enough grass is always the top priority!

Phew! Great news earlier today as our herd passed its annual TB test. This of course means we can continue selling raw milk for another 12 months - always a big relief!

We’re kicking off 2026 with some good news: thanks to your donations to our crowdfunding campaign over the last 18 months, we have now managed to purchase our Zero Grazer! Although we didn’t quite hit our full target, we’ve managed to take out a loan to cover the remainder. A big thank you to everyone who donated, whatever the amount.

The Zero Grazer is due to arrive with us this month; if we have a sunny February/March, we may even be able to cut some fresh grass early for the cows, as our silage yield is down from last year. Keep an eye out for footage of its inaugural cut!

To recap: in June 2024, we lost the rental access to 80 acres of our best grazing land to proposed housing developments. Our best solution was to bring in organic grass from elsewhere, to replace the grass we’ve lost.

And so, we launched this crowdfunding campaign to purchase a Zero Grazer: this great piece of kit can be towed by a tractor, and allows us to cut fresh grass from other farms and bring it to ours, and feed it straight to our cows.

In addition to your kind donations, this summer we had generous offers from local farmers and landowners to allow us to cut their grass for hay and silage, which has really dug us out of a hole. The Zero Grazer will be a game-changer for us moving forward, as it allows us to maintain our cows’ year-round grass-fed diet, and continue supplying you all with the best kind of raw milk.

New Egg Supplier 🥚

After 15 years of supplying us, sadly we will no longer be selling hens’ eggs from Dunstars Farm, as they have decided to cease production. However, we do have a new local supplier, Park Farm, based in Ripe. These eggs are very much of the same quality and taste as Dunstars Farm, being both free-range and pasture-raised, as well as free of antibiotics, hormones or growth promoters.
There is no change in the price for the eggs. We hope you enjoy them just as much and we welcome any feedback!

NEW: Beef Bone Broth

It's been highly requested for a while now, so we're excited to launch this new product! We've teamed up with Wild Alchemy Foods to bring you this special beef bone broth. Made using the bones of only our own 100% grass-fed cows, our beef broth is a great source of collagen and amino acids, which aid joint and skin health.

The inclusion of medicinal mushrooms (shiitake, chaga and reishi) adds a further range of health benefits, including supporting the immune system, reduced inflammation, antioxidants, and anti-aging properties. The remaining carefully-selected ingredients come together to form a delicious umami flavour.

Our broth comes in our reusable glass jars (425ml). You can keep your jar at home or rinse and return for us to reuse – don't throw it out!

Use as a base for soups, stews and sauces, and as a substitute for stock in recipes. And don't waste the fat cap: this healthy fat can be used with the rest of the broth, or as you would use any cooking fat.

Our beef broth will be available at all markets from tomorrow, including our Borough Market shop, as well as on our local milk rounds. To add to your local doorstep delivery, contact our office on 01323 449494, or email us at [email protected].

It will be available on our online store soon!
