There is a bit of a chill in the air today. A proper comfort food day.

Faggots are a great way of consuming all of that highly nutrious organ meat; both palatable and easy to cook. A simple dinner with mash and onion gravy.

If your newsfeed is like mine and constantly trying to sell you a drink containing animal organs for almost £80 a month, for the benefit of your health, but not your wallet - Faggots are far more affordable just £1.30 each.

We have actually been making arrangements for Christmas since January, but now seems a more appropriate time to talk about it.

This year, after much consideration, discussion with the farmers and conversations with friends and peers, we have a new turkey supplier!

This year all our turkeys and geese will come from J&R Sheffield near Heathfield.

This is a family run Turkey farm which has been running 76 years! Most of day to day running is now carried out by daughter Lucy (3rd generation) and her husband James. We have a number of mutual contacts, and on my first meeting with them it seems that half my family showed up for a catch up! They hire the same staff to help with plucking and packing every year and this is a very much a family affair too, with some families now on their 5th generation at Sheffields.

Ian and myself made a visit to see them and the turkeys early in September and we were extremely impressed by their set up and organisation.

The geese are free range as you will see from the photos. The turkeys are in Barns with some access to the outside. Apparently the turkeys like to go out and watch for the aeroplanes! They produce their own straw for bedding, which gives them lots of chance to scratch about and they have lots of space and perches.

My husband Ian was out on the rounds this morning and a conversation with a regular customer reminded us both of one of our core objectives when I started out, of and the value of small local businesses as these services are not replicated elsewhere. The customer is elderly and not well and we are providing a newspaper delivery 6 days a week now they can no longer get out, and was concerned that we were being put out. He is actually one of 4 people we do that for - all used to come in daily until their health took a turn and we pass their homes daily. Often they live alone and it is our way of ensuring that they are ok.

When we set out, serving the community was our primary objective. This has led us down many paths and we have supported many local events and charities. This year alone we have supported St Michael's Hospice, the Sara Lee Trust, Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat, British Legion, Five Village House, Fairfest, Fairlight Spring Fling, Pett Flower Show, Pett baby group and i am sure others I have forgotten about. We are just about to start planning Pett Fest 2027 with Royal Oak Pett But it is helping others which remains our greatest pleasure. Following that conversation this morning Ian started talking to one of the utility contractors on the road who turned out to be the new foreman. He had been unaware that the elderly customers driveway had been damaged by earlier works, they was subsequently introduced and the damage has now been added to the list of things to be put right.

We are just one little business, but I know most other small businesses do similar on a daily basis. We provide human contact to those who may not see anyone. We fix little problems, make introductions, give directions, and just generally understand that the big modern world is not accessible to everyone.

So please where you can support your local independent businesses, we are about so much more than just sales and what we do for our communities is just not replicated by the large retailers and chains.

I know I speak for the rest of the team when I say we really enjoy that part of the job. But the biggest appreciation has to go to my husband, for this is not his job, but what he volunteers to do on his weekend. And also to my Dad who at the age of 81 is my voluntary paper boy 5 days a week, which (unless it is cold and wet 😂) he absolutely loves doing. Behind this business, and many others, is a family supporting your community and all our independent businesses need your support to keep this up.

For all our followers from Lydd Farmers & Artisan Market we are coming to you! We have missed seeing you all - although we haven't missed working on a Sunday 😀. We did say we would try this, but we do need a number of orders to make it viable.

We will bring across your orders on Saturday 10 October (apologies can't do this week due to another event). We will be there from 10.30 to 11.30am. As we aren't that familiar with Lydd it would be easier (and probably quicker) if people were able to collect their orders from us parked outside the Community Centre by The Rype.

Please either phone or message in your orders with a contact telephone number. We will accept cash or card payments on the day.

You have plenty of notice to get your orders together and tell your friends! Orders will close on Thursday 8 October. If this works we will make it a monthly event.

Did you know that we offer a delivery service?

We know that the cost of fuel may be making you think about using your car (we know we are!). Hence if you would like us to deliver and we can fit it in to our existing Monday to Friday delivery runs there will be no delivery charge! Give us a phone call and we will be happy to arrange that.

Our rounds stretch from Rye to St Leonards. (If you fall outside our usual routes but still within the area there maybe a £5 delivery fee)

The nights drawing in bring thoughts of comforting casseroles. Traditional liver and bacon is a very quick to cook economical answer, coming in at about £1.50 a portion.

So very good for you too. When I look the fittest and most aged customers I serve (around 90 years+) they all regularly have liver on their shopping lists.

I am doing a batch cook with this little lot, some for my freezer and some for Dad's.
